Paul Bruchal
I already seen this post but viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29388&hilit=oil+catch+can it didnt answer my question... When I bought my MJ, I looked at the air filter and it was half black and half clean white.... Would it effect anything like idle or how the engine runs at all? This is what I'm talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universa ... ccessories
mvusse
That's designed for a turbo, but I don't see why it wouldn't work between the valve cover breather and air intake. As for oil in the air filter, eventually it will restrict airflow to the point that you will see diminished performance and possibly increased fuel consumption, especially at high rpms. At idle the engine sucks little enough air it wouldn't make much of a difference.
Paul Bruchal
So is it normal to have abunch of oil on my air filter? It looked half black half white.
mvusse
It's caused by blow-by. It is not actually "normal", but something the Jeep 4.0 has a reputation for and most of us just learn to live with it. Whenever I'm at the junkyard I check for good condition air filters as they are less than $1 and for that price I can't justify not changing them. A number of people I know with Cherokees as well as some people on here have constructed some sort of oil catch device to keep it out of the air filter and in a container instead.
