jpnjim
I just put a deposit on a car today, I checked the VIN here (free insurance company check): https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_aw ... k/vincheck and it was clean (no real detail with this free check tho). Anyone know of any other decent free ones, or the best deal $$ wise for a single VIN check. I saw everything from a single carfax report for $44.95 to some $5.99 VIN checks, that looked pretty shady to me.
terrawombat
Unfortunately, I don't know of any good free (or even cheap ones). I cannot believe the price of the single VIN checks from the big two (Carfax and Autocheck). I can't imagine that the costs of accessing a database for a VIN check are that substantial that they need $45 from you to run it. I believe a big reason for their price gouging and policy changing (I don't think Carfax allows you to get unlimited reports anymore) has to do with the many car forums where people obtain the unlimited account and check all of their buddy's VINs for free. Was I that transparent? ;)
