Sensor location

Recommended Posts

I have a 1987 Comanche 4.0L. Just got done doing the cluster swap. I have the oil pressure gauge working. One thing that is confusing me is the coolant temp sensor.

I got the cluster out of a 1989 Cherokee. The coolant sensor on the truck was on the thermostat housing at the nose of the engine close to the hood. I cannot find mine on my 87.

Where is it?

After that, I just have to match the 225,000 mile odometer back to my 164,000 and I can put the dash back together!

If a 1989 had a temp sensor in the thermostat housing, then someone swapped a 91+ thermostat housing onto it.

The temp sender for the gauge is on the back on the head, driver's side. It has a single wire connector attached to it. Be very gentle with these, they break without warning.

They actually have two sensors in some of the older ones. The actual coolant temp sensor is on the back, driver side head as Geonovast said.

The second is the one that controls the fan. In the older Renix style, the sensor is in the bottom, drivers side radiator, towards the back half. In the Chrysler style (91+), the sensor is in the thermostat housing.

If you have a sensor in the thermostat housing, check to see if someone converted your system to an open style cooling system (radiator has a cap on it to fill). That can save a lot of headaches later if you figure out now if they actually did swap them.

They actually had THREE on the old ones. The one for the gauge/idiot light is located, as noted above, at the rear of the head. The optional one to control the auxiliary fan (if present) is in the driver's side radiator tank. The one that provides engine temperature data to the ECU is located on the driver's side of the block, in the general vicinity of the knock sensor.

So that's what that sensor was. :rotfl2:

I ended up breaking the pigtail off mine somehow on my old Cherokee but never bothered with it since the performance and gas mileage wasn't effected at all.

That's what I love about this forum, they ask one thing and we all learn about other stuff. :clapping:
