O2 sensor testing??? what problems are caused

I have a questionable O2 sensor that I am trying to figure out if it is bad and needs replaced or if there is a way to test it. I have it out and would like to know if I can test it out of truck. I know they are only around 30-35 bucks but trying to keep from buying things I may not really need at this time. I also would like to know if it is bad what problems would occur with a bad O2 sensor? As of now when it gets to Operating temp it will not go past idle, but will idle all day long.
