clutch disk installation (direction)

Recommended Posts

Most clutch disks are marked "flywheel" for proper installation., the one I have is not.

Which way does the clutch disk go? On the splined portion of the center disk there is a flush side and one side of the splines protrudes about .500". Which side goes to the flywheel? The factory service manual shows a picture with the protruding splines toward the flywheel, but there is not reference to direction.

Look at the disc. The springs will be farther out on one side than the other. This is the side goes to the transmission. The smoother side goes to the flywheel. Normally the longer hub is on the same side as the protruding springs. Place the disc on the flywheel and make sure it's not touching anywhere other than the composite stuff. Slide it around a little. It should slide freely. Think I would take it back where I got it and make them show you which side is correct.

That may not work. At most parts stores the guy behind the counter is just a computer key puncher. And only know were the part is on the shelf becoust the computer told them. They may have no clue how to put the parts together if the computer does not show it. soapbox.gif

:agree:

Most auto parts stores can suck it when it comes to repair advice.

I do however, agree with Jim on the spring placement.

Since most parts have somekind of a warrenty, It would behove the store to make sure he gets it right.Or they gonna be giving him a new disc. More than once me and a parts clerk went in back and opened boxes to check on something.
