dfreeman616
short story: a friend of my sister is having problems witha 98 caravan over there and needs a good shop that deals with driveability and electrical systems. she's had the alternator and battery replaced, and now it doesn't seem to be charging and having a variety of electrical problems. anyone over there have some advice? thanks
Automan2164
Check out the emissions registry up there for shops with 100% success rates... Usually, they are darn good, and are very professional. As for her problems... I think the voltage reg of the alternator is in the PCM on the caravan... If that fried, even a new alt will not fix the charging problem. Rob L. dfreeman616
i was just looking at the diagram for the charging system on them, the regulator diodes are in the alt but the pcm controls both the asd relay and the generator field driver. the problem is i can't do the tests from michigan to help her, and she doesn't know what to do even if i told her...so she really needs a shop that's competent in those areas. i'm not familiar with the emissions registry since we don't have one in michigan that i'm aware of. i take it there's a link online somewhere? Automan2164
Here you go. http://www.wivip.com/BOOK%20FOR%20PRINT.pdf If a vehicle fails emissions, they have to get it repaired. A shop gets a score based on how many successful repairs they complete. Since most emissions items are hard to pin down at times, and they also are usually drivability related, looking to see what a shops score on repairs is good when searching for a competent mechanic. Its a really useful tool if you don't work on your own stuff, or are looking to recommend someone. Rob L.
