86twowheeler
I get a loud rattle in 3rd 4th and 5th. It goes away if I push in the clutch and when I give it gas. I recently replaced the clutch. Anyone have experience with the wrong, or a faulty, clutch being installed? 86 4cyl with Ax-5 trans. Is it supposed to have an external slave with a spacer? -600JeepMJ
did you replace the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing? both will give you the problem you describe when they are wore out. :( yes there is a spacer on the external slave on my 86 XJ and MJ. :hmm: but my 90 MJ and 88,89 XJs have internal slaves :dunno:

86twowheeler
I replaced the throwout bearing. I measured the clutch I removed it was 9 11/16" diameter, the one I installed was a 9 1/8". This may be a stupid question. Does it matter?
86twowheeler
I installed the correct clutch 9 11/16" it came with a small plastic spacer that goes on the end of the slave cylinder push rod. didn't remember that during disassembly but it won't disengage without it? I thought surfacing the flywheel would take care of the rattle, I am wrong and disappointed. I still have a rattle only when just letting off the gas in 3rd 4th and 5th. I stayed in 2nd and ran the RPM's high and didn't get a rattle but a whine. I am therefore thinking it is a bearing. The truck has 300k miles on it, supposedly the engine has been rebuilt. I don't think the trani has been touched. All I can think is the bearing on the input shaft. The list. 1. Rebuilt the rearend. 2. New U-Joints. 3.New (correct) Clutch. Surfaced the Flywheel.Friction,Pressure, pilot and throwout new.
