Clutch fluid is gone

I am losing all my clutch fluid very fast. I was up in Wrightwood for the weekend and hasd to fill it up about every 15 miles or so if I wasnt cruising the highway just to get home. I figure its either a bad master or slave. I have an 87' 2.5 TBI 2wd. I am pretty sure the slave is internal, how hard are they to swap? It is pouring rain so I havent had a chance to get under the truck and check the bell for fluid yet. Any other idead or words to the wise? Thanks.

I came forward the same problem in october.

 

No inside firewall leak from the master cylinder.

 

A lot of oil dripping from the bell housing.

 

My problem was an exploder slave cylinder.

 

I have to fill up the reservoir every 3-4 hours

 

We dropped the tranny and changed the cylinder.

Keep in mind that a leak like that could also be the rubber section of the line between the (clutch) master cylinder and the slave cylinder. Even if your leak is the slave, that hose is now 22 years old and has a lot of miles and a lot of time on it. Replace it now, when doing the slave. Otherwise, you'll be like me -- ALL new clutch, master cylinder, and slave cylinder -- 100 miles from home on an Interstate toll highway, with NO clutch.

 

Whatever part it is -- master, slave, or hose -- be sure to use genuine Jeep parts. For whatever reason, aftermarket clutch and slave cylinders seem to have a life expectancy not better than about 6 months. This is one place where it is definitely worthwhile spending the extra coin for the genuine parts.

If your are lucky, your leak is outside the transmission.

 

My truck is 4x4:

 

-To drop the transmission 3hres (2 guys)

 

- To rebuild it about 2 hres

New parts

- New bearing

- New Clutch

- New Slave

- New Hose

- Transmission from a Cherokee (1990)

- DOT 5.0

- New master cylinder
