    Year, Make, Model. 1986 Jeep Comanche XLS Image, if available Engine / Trans / Transfercase / Front axle / Rear axle / Wheelbase ~'92-ish 4.0L H.O. /AW4 floor shift/ D30/D35/ Long wheel base Build date: (its on the driverside door sticker, in the form of month and year) Long gone Current Location: Region will do, state, and area of state. Central Sierra Foothills of California Status: Is it still on the road, is it in the junkyard? Project awaiting work? Used for misc. work around the property. Hasn't seen the road in years, gets abandoned in the tree row and resurrected from time to time. Currently has a broken piston, sitting alongside the shop awaiting repair. Essentially, a project awaiting work. I would like to have this truck back on the road. Notes: Anything that makes this comanche different from the rest. Skid plates, plows, lights, bumpers, weird factory options... Would also be a good place to note the exterior color, and the interior color and combination, IE, Bench or buckets, Vinyl or cloth, column shift or floor shift. Bucket seats, floor shift, skid plates, tow hooks, XLS... so it has lots of options. Current owner: Well, you know. Put down who has it, the yard its in, or anything of that sort. I am the current owner. Owned this truck since 2005 or so, daily drove it for about ten years. Been sitting around about that long now. Second Comanche, first was an '88 sportruck my dad bough new. 288k stock engine, 360k when I replaced it with this truck.
  4. I have a factory XLS Comanche that came with bucket seats. In my infinite wisdom I scrapped the passanger seat as it was in horrible shape. I figured I could easily replace it later with a Cherokee seat, doh. If only I would have had the foresight to remove the bracket. Needless to say I am in need of a mounting bracket for a passenger side bucket seat. Not looking for a whole seat unless someone happens to be near Sonora, Ca. 95370 Thanks in advance

I forgot how easy is it to get at the fuel pump on these trucks, pulled it out and replaced the 90deg hose and test fired it seemed to work ok after smacking it a couple times. put it back in and it pumped for a second and quit. Pulled it back out, changed the pump/ pickup screen... clearly the wrong pump, but it works. Truck runs again. Looks like the pump was just gunked up with ethanol fuel crud. Any more work on the rig will go to my build thread. If I can call it a build thread, more like how to resurrect a Comanche after it gets abandoned in the tree row, repeatedly. Thanks all for the help, this thread will end here. So great to have a community of experienced folks willing to take the time to contribute to the knowledge commons.
  6. Grabbed the whole assembly you showed here at the parts store today, so if the weather holds out I'll drop the tank and investigate. Hopefully it is just a hose or something, but figured it wouldn't hurt to have the whole chunk on hand just in case.
  7. Tinkered a bit this morning, not long. Mostly out of curiosity I soldered the stubs of the old distributor wires together, now I have spark. So for whatever reason at least on this engine, the sync signal from the distributor is required for spark. I put 5 gallons in the tank and primed the fuel pump a couple times. I could hear the pump run, but no fuel. I have the line disconnected just before the fuel filter, so it is a pump problem. Verified power and ground at the pump just to be sure. Weird thing is I can hear it under prime and while cranking, pump or inlet sock must be full up with junk or corrosion from sitting. So the Comanche will probably sit a while longer until I tow it over to the garage and drop the tank.
  8. Putted around on the Comanche a bit this afternoon. Found the missing wire. Out of curiosity I disconnected the fuel line to keep any old gas out of it and cranked the engine over with the distributor (sync signal generator) wires disconnected via rodent, no spark. Could be coincidence. First crank I had no power to the coil, jumped ASD relay and got power the coil. Still no spark. So something on the other side of the coil is holding it up. It was starting to rain hard, so that's as far as I got. I can hear the fuel pump prime and no fuel coming out, so I must have drained it out before it started sitting. I dug out some of my literature for the Comanche, there was a circa '92 Chrysler training manual (student reference book) for 2.5 & 4.0l Sequential Fuel Injection. There is a note written by the technician taking the training course. "'91 and '92 will not run W/O Sync Signal, '93 won't start W/O sync but will continue to run once started. " Figured these pictures might be handy to somebody, someday.

  11. Thanks all I didn't even think of trying to start it after I noticed the damage. I usually figure no crank position sensor no-spark, I'll have to wander up there tomorrow and crank on it, see if it barks off. Good call on the signature, updated. Kinda hard to get a decent response when you all have no idea what rig I am asking about. Sincerely, I appreciate the time you took to look that up. I only wish I had mentioned I have a 4.0l H.O. engine. flat weather pack connector off the distributor.
  12. I suppose I could look into where the CPS hooks into the harness and maybe trace it, but I would guess it goes to the computer then the distributor. I haven't pulled up any diagrams yet.

This time they ate the distributor wires flush with the distributor and the wiring that goes to it. To the point I can't find a trace of the wires that lead to the distributor. I am going to order a new distributor, but I need to figure out where the distributor wires come out the the harness. Does anybody have a picture or description of where to look to find the distributor wiring in the harness?

  15. Another year has gone by, and the Comanche is still relegated to firewood and general ranch duties. I still have too many trucks so it is time to let is go. If anyone runs across this and is interested, let me know. I still like to the little truck, so I am not going to advertise aggressively, but if a Comanche fan wants to buy it and do something with it... it is available.
  16. Quick update, I have been using the truck around my property and enjoying it. Put a couple other rigs up for sale so my parking area isn't feeling as crowded. I am still willing to sell the rig, but I will keep it unless I get 1k. The rear main has a pretty decent oil leak and there is a loud rattle, I am assuming is, associated with exhaust. With the age of the motor, I am thinking about pulling it and re-sealing the motor, inspecting everything, etc. My question to the forums, what engine gasket set/ rebuild kits do you folks like to run? I am not looking at replacing pistons, cam, etc. unless I run into problems once I am in there.   17. I hear you, I am just kinda over it. To me selling it for $500 is more finding it a home than anything. I am sure I could part it for more, but I kinda want to see the truck go to somebody whole. I have way to many rigs, everything runs and drives. It is time to thin the herd. My next move was to buy a parts Cherokee and fix up the Comanche, but I would rather invest my time into other projects. I do like that little truck a lot, hope somebody does something cool with it.

  20. Listed for $2k on Craigslist. Listed for $1k here. After I put in a little more work, I will probably not take 1k anymore, but I would like the rig to find a good home.
  21. Worked on the rig again today. Bad relay for the fuel pump, so I replaced it. That took care of the fuel problem. Found some rodent damage to one of the injector wires, so I soldered in a couple new pieces of wire, got it all wrapped up with heat shrink. Truck fires right up. Still has a pretty good rattle under the truck somewhere, but that is for another day. Rummaged around and found a used set of bfg all-terrains for the truck. Hopefully sometime this week I will get the tires swapped. Now I am on the look out for a set of seats and a floor covering.
  22. I am still planning to sell it, but I will likely regret it someday. I have a few too many projects. It has been fun working on the Comanche though.
