  1. Okay- I just went out and looked at the truck and it would be pretty darn difficult to put the hoses on backwards- the feed line is prebent in just a certain way. I had good steering before I did the repair- just a little whining when I turned hard, but could do that with one hand. The pump does not whinefrom what I can hear, it sounds to be coming from the steering box. I may have sucked allot of air into the steering box when I pushed it out into the street. You can see a line of steering fluid form my garage going out into the street. What is messing with my mind is that the steering handles normally at times and at others it is horrific- mostly at slower speeds, and after it has run for a while. The pulley is from the original assembly so the speed of rotation should be the same. So bad pump? Or wrong year- I did check the motor stamp and it is a 92. I will put it back on the jackstands and try to work out any air. Is there a bleed fitting on the steering box as there are on the brake calipers? Thanks for all of the input - you guys rock!
  2. hhhmmmmmm... You are right about the red herrings though. When I bought the MJ the owner said the motor and front axle were from a 92 XJ. He didn't do it either though. Good info about the disconnect- I do have a vaccum fitting on the axle so I wonder what kind it is now? thanks!
  3. The rest of the front axle looks good- when I had it up on jacks doing the intial "bleed"- I noticed just a little leaking from the seal that connects to the front drive shaft- OR it could be spray from the original leak. Thanks for the input!
  4. Hey all- I just put a new power steering pump in the MJ last weekend and now i am fighting the wheel some of the time! Feel free to point and laugh, but then offer up any ideas please! Here is the jist of it- I have the 87MJ with that 92 XJ motor and front axle. I had a leak between the pump and resivour- hence the replacement. So I wound up using the new hoses for 87 and new pump assembly for 92- bolted in fine. I had to put the truck on the street for the night and I pushed it over there with the MRS. steering- no pump in mind you. So after everything was bolted up and filled I started the engine and ran it for a while. Then I added the Lucas seal conditioner that the parts guy recommended- dollars for a littel insurance, no problem. Now I did put the truck up on jackstands and turn the wheel a few times in each direction with no problems, but when I took it for a test drive the steering felt WORSE than having no power steering- I had to fight the wheel to get it to turn. It does get better when I rev the engine though. No leaking from any of the fittings.- Thank God for small things. What scares me is that I heard a loud WHAM as I was driving to work this morning. Weather was too crappy to take the bike. but still no leaking. So has anyone else had a situation like this? Could it be the axle disconnect? Or maybe a bad pump? Any thoughts are appreciated.
  5. Thanks guys! The speedo cable connector was not in all the way and was causing the jumping. fortunately I had the connector from the bone yard unit- I pulled a bit too hard opon removingit!
  6. Hey out there- I just went to the local bone yard- Pick and Pull on route 41 and 173 if your from northern IL- they have quite a few XJ's to pull but from. But I read up on ther dash conversion and since I didn't have a Tach, this looked pretty easy or so I thought. Good news: the dash works great everything is tracking, temps, pressure etc. but the speedo likes to jump as the speedo goes up to about 50 miles an hour then it is stable. So my question is this: when I pulled the dash in the yard I spun the back fitting on the speedo to make sure it worked, my buddy said it will screw up the counter weights in side. But when I installed the dash the speedo cable came out of the sleeve a little. But since it works, I don't believe it is broken. So what do youy think- speedo cable from the trans or counter weights?
  7. Hey all- Is it possible to change all of the lock cyclinders out -yes the ignition too- with a let model version? Reason being is the wife drives the 99 XJ and if I could use one key..........oh would that make life easy! Anyone done it? I just lost the face plate on my radio- my fault since I didn't remove it. and since I leave it unlocked I can't really gripe. but I can't even lock it since my door key no longer works!
  8. That Doug thorley sounds good- Thanks for all the good info. It sounds like the money will be spent on the header and the high flow cat, a stock muffler/ Auto zone job will work just fine with a turn down right before the rear axel. Rock on guys!
  9. Hey MJer's I got the truck painted ( I am quite proud of the rattle can job) and the bed liner worked out well- Herculiner is good stuff! Thanks to the pointers on getting the bed off for rust prevention. BUt now I need to make this thing sound better- It has a glass pack welded to the Cat and the pipe has rusted out just over the axel. Not pretty. Oh yeah the header is cracked as well. Hence the complete replacement. I know of a few manufactures that make some good products Flowmaster, etc. But has anyone ever done the WHOLE system? Rusty was scratching his head on that one, he dosen't make a cat back forthe MJ's yet. I do have access to a pipe bender at he auto hobby shop, but have never used one before. So the question is this: has anyone ever done the whole system and what muffler, catalytic maker s do you recommend? thanks much!
  10. Thanks for the info- way more than a service manual can tell you. I know if I don't take it off there is now way the paint will come out right. You guys rock-and not in a granite sort of way. Cheers CM Bryant
  11. Hey everybody- I am getting ready to prime the comanche before the winter hits. I want to remove the bed so as to get the space between the cab and bed. Is there any bizarro ritual that I need to do before getting the bed removed? I heard it is eight bolts but, the gas filler neck has got to be an issue. Any info would be REALLY appreciated, as too keep me from inventing new swear words during the process. Cheers
