  1. I have an '87 comanche, 4.0 I6 4WD...can it tow a 2000 VW Jetta on a tow dolly? I need to go about 45 miles, all highway, no major hills but a few small ones, and a minute of city driving once I get there. I have a 2000lb tow hitch, great brakes, and I'm probably going to do it unless there is a grave reason not to. Also, I've read that the comanche might be too light...I do have some weight in the bed, would that help or hinder the process? Jetta is unloaded and empty. Thanks in advance!
  2. Thanks everyone. So I do have a 231 mounted to the Peugeot. Will this work with an AX15, or is the clocking different? So I guess I'll be looking for a 94+ XJ AX-15 to mount up to my existing transfer case. Any other recommended upgrades while i'm doing this? Thanks!
  3. Hi, I've been following this forum since I got my truck last spring, and it's been great, thanks everybody! I am now considering some upgrades, but I want some advice before I proceed with purchases. Sorry for any repetitive questions, but I searched a few different times, and couldn't get the answers I need. Here goes: Want to replace peugeot crapper with AX-15, partly because I need to, and partly because I would love to someday bolt up the Mercedes OM617 turbo diesel motor. It looks like you just need new mounts and an adapter, with the AX15. Someday... But are there different types of AX-15? different number of splines on Wranglers? What is salvageable from a Wrangler, and which years? Should I just stick to looking under cherokee's at the junkyard? HELP! Now, which transfer case do I have, which one(s) did AX15's come with, and what should I be looking for? It looks like the 231 is the way to go, no? I have an opportunity to get a 231 from an old Wrangler, are they all the same? Thanks for any help, I wish I could find the answers, I know they are on this forum!
  4. I put a renix full gauge cluster from a '90 XJ into my '87 MJ, everything works except the oil gauge. I haven't tried to replace the sending unit with a new one (I of course got the 2 used sending units from the XJ) but I have noticed in my searches that a lot of people are having this issue (One guy thought his oil pressure was so high it was off the charts!) I think i'm just getting a faulty reading, either bad sending unit, problem in the wiring, or - is the terminal that clips to the old style sending unit compatible with the new version? BTW, anybody want to buy a sending unit socket for the 1-1/8" old version? Paid $10, don't need it anymore...PM me. Thanks
  5. It's off of an I-6 90 Cherokee, and looks like the red and black one in other posts. Anybody else in this RPM range? I'll hit 3,000 when I'm accelerating, but not much more than that. Oil sender socket, huh? Learn something everyday. I'll look into that, thanks.
  6. Hey, I'm in the middle of this swap right now. 2 Questions - How did you remove the old oil sending unit? It's more than hand tight, no place for a box end wrench...maybe a 1" will fit over the whole thing? And how do you adjust the new odometer to match your old mileage? My RPM's feel a little under-reported, too. What RPM range are you guys typically cruising in? I'm almost always between 1,000 and 2,000 (now that I know!) I love this thing by the way! Thanks
  7. I was pulling a cherokee cluster out of a salvage yard yesterday, and I traced the darn thing all the way to the firewall, but couldnt get the 2 plugs on the engine side to disconnect...so I went back and clipped all the wires that came out of the cluster. (The yard was closing and I had to go!) Will this work to install into my 87 comanche, if I splice all the wires by color? I havent gotten the sending units yet, but if the tach is already in the harness, I'll be happy until I get them. Any thoughts? Did I blow it!?! Are there only 2 sending units to get?
  8. Well the radiator is brand new, too, so that can't be it. I'm most concerned about the 4WD light, any thoughts, anybody? Here she is:
  9. Hi Everyone! I just purchased an '87 4x4 manual 4.0 litre with 141k miles last week. It was well maintained by the first 2 owners, and has very little rust (even under the floorboards) so I'm really pleased so far! I have a couple questions regarding the 4WD, CAD and cooling system. 1) My 4WD light stays on all the time, except when I am getting into the higher RPM's in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear (climbing a hill on the interstate, for example) Ive read that the 4WD works on vacuum, any ideas what might be the problem? 2) I am interested in locking my CAD, looks simple enough and I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Any reason not to do it? Should it just be done? Will doing that keep my 4WD light on all the time (and maybe a previous owner already did it? I haven't checked) 3) Lastly, the last owner had overheating problems. He had the head gasket replaced and new thermostat recently. The top coolant hose is hot when the engine is, so I'm not worried about it. However, when I drive up hills (4WD) or on long mountain roads, I notice my coolant bubbling and spraying out of the vent cap when I pull over. Any suggestions on how to prevent future issues? Will swapping for the radiator with the overflow bottle automatically fix this, or is there anything else I can do? 4) one more thing - any recommendations on aftermarket tachs or temp gauges that I can install? I like knowing these things ;) Thanks everybody! This looks like a great community to be a part of. BTW, I live in California (truck is originally from near Reno, NV) near Tahoe in the summer and in SoCal in winters.
