1989, Jeep MJ ,Eliminator 4.0, axe 5, 231 transfer case, Dana 30 front Dana 35 rear. Build date 04/10/1989 (Thanks Eaglescout) Northern Oklahoma Running work in progress The truck was repainted red at one time, interior is mostly grey someone removed the buckets, and replaced it with a blue bench, and cut down the center console. It has a 6' lift, custom bumpers front, and rear.overhead rack, and tool box.31x10/50 15's on my stock XJ rims. Extra lighting front,an rear, and have more to add.Sounds are all pioneer, new head, and 4 new speakers. No amp,and not sure I need one.If I do I have a couple kicking around in the garage, and a couple 10's too. I've added a couple heavy duty parts to the front end,and have plan's for more.I'm also planning on changing out the T case solid rod for a cable version shifter an maybe a mustang short throw shifter. After I get the trans rebuilt. My 4 year old grandson gave it its name big ugly.Looking at the pictures you can see why.If your wondering about the lime green dif. covers there in memory of one our local Jeepers here in northern OK. His lime green flat fender was know all over this state, and some others,(RIP Ken).

Wagon I have a question. Can I get you any info off the door plate(different door) on my truck. That would tell us anything about that truck? If it could help anyone on here?Or maybe locate the truck if its here in Oklahoma someone may want it or parts? -

Ok so in could have been built with the 4.0? I saw that 175 mm in there again too.I'm sure the rear is a 35 probably with a newer,or older cover. Its the first one I've seen with the rubber plug that has to be changed its got a bad leak at the rear.So not cool.L knew it was the ELIMINATOR model I found some of the old decal under some paint. -

Someone has done a ton of changes to this truck. This explains a lot.My interior is gray, but it has a blue bench seat. The console was cut down too. What looked like the original paint is the same red as my XJ hard to tell with the funky Camo over it now.Different motor in it too.Its starting to sound more like Frankin truck someone saved from a salvage yard. -

Wow just from one number Wagon that's some cool stuff. Its now black, and not the green, and rolled a little the only straight panel left is the rear hatch. What the heck dose 175 mm rear axle mean? I see it has a dana 30 front, and 3.55 gears.I found the codes for the trans, and t case.as expected junk for what I wanted to do with it.I'm thinking someone swaped the the T case shifter plate. After being under it yesterday I don;t think its been swapped out.No marred bolts,no gouges in the under coating.I'm thinking its the stock T case. Thanks for the help Wagon. -

Parts are parts question

Thanks you guys for all the help. I've been trying to download pictures off my phone to my PC for a couple of days.I think I may be using the wrong cord.Going to try again in the morning. Its been a while since I was under that ZJ ,but if I remember the dif cover looks just like my XJ.My MJ has a different cover same shape rubber plug.I learned a long time ago in auto body school that the titles are not always 100 %. correct on the year it was made. Some states go by the year it was sold.I learned it again the hard way.John my body shop teacher would be ROFLHAO at me right now. Always check the door plate,or the tail lights unless they've been replaced they almost never lie. That sucks for me the drivers door on my MJ has been replaced. So i don't really have any build specks for my truck. The guy I bought the truck from said it was really rare 4WD,5sp,with the 4.0.That there was only 500 built like it that year.Sounds like BS to sell the truck now.I already knew that the MJ's were rare anyway, and I really liked the trucks potential.I'll get some pictures up of the truck as soon as I can. WOOHO Axles I can use,and motor check.Trans some junk to sell. Thats a great end for a bad day. Thanks again to all of you. -

Yeah your right, but the 20 year old parts have a ton less miles on them 30, verses over a 100, I'm not feeling the,( low pinion) though.Maybe better to just use the disk brakes less work. I think the trans is a no go too. What you think about the 4.0 usable or not ? -

JEEP_cannible replied to JEEP_cannible's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm thinking it's a ZJ,and not a WJ.I even checked the motor mounts, and the look like my XJ only smaller. They were also in the same location. You can't really see the bolt pattern very well.So not for sure on that one. What about the axles anyone know if its worth a swap,or just use the rear disk brakes? The conversion didn't look that hard, but some newer axle's would be nice. -

That's the funny thing Pete it looks exactly like my 97 grand that's why I bought it for parts. Tail lights, bumpers down to the same rim's. Only difference is one is the V8,and the other is the 4.0. I'll get this right sooner or later ZJ Pete its a ZJ. -

JEEP_cannible replied to JEEP_cannible's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK checked the build plate at the door.It read 4/98 so is it a WJ or a ZJ title said 99.I'm guessing that makes it a ZJ.So my question would be are any of these parts usable? I have a good motor, trans, and both rearends. -

JEEP_cannible replied to JEEP_cannible's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Eagle now I'll have to give it a good look.LMFOA I used to call my 79 wagoneer,(the boat anchor) she was one heavy Jeep. -
I have a WJ I bought for parts its a 1999. I already found out I can't really use the trans as I planned.Even if I could get in working in my 1988 MJ it probably wouldn't last long.So I have other question. Can I use the axles in my 1988 MJ or my 87 XJ would this be worth the trouble.I would really like to have rear disk brakes, and the newer axles. Mine arn't getting any younger. I have seen a lot of brake upgrades were they use the disks off a WJ. Thanks for any help here. I know the 4.0 can be done I just have to use a lot of the renix parts off my old motor. There is a really great write up in here about that swap.I also saw one on using the XJ axles in an MJ,but nothing about the WJ. Is there a problem with these axle's are they weak? Can't hold up with big tires, and lifts? I'd love some feed back on the topic. Thanks

Auto Trans swap help.
JEEP_cannible replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Gogmorgo, and Eagle for the help. The list really helps explain a few things.Knowing now that the trans out of the WJ is not a good swap for the MJ I have .Helps out even more with what I was trying to do.I also pushed to find out some more things about the drive train in the ford. The axle's are converted to 6 lug the rear is actually a ford 9'.I still need to check the tag again to see if its a posi. or limited slip.Their also the same width as the XJ and my MJ. Both are hung with leaf springs. so their not going to be much help. The t case is out of a J10 truck,(M715 or something close to it).I also found out that its a lot like an older version of like the Atlas t case.Heavier, larger, and the added PTO.It could make for a good swap in a crawler with a 2wd trans.I was also told the check the gearing in the axles before I use them in anything. The company that did the mini truck conversions is known for not matching the gear ratios. This part didn't sound right to me,but a friend that owns a couple said. The front could be lower geared than the rear so it would pull harder when your stuck? That just didn't sound cool to me.He said that they had a dash plate that said something like( not to be driven in 4wd for extended periods of time).I couldn't find one in either of the two spots they should have been.I'm going to check closer anyway better safe than sorry. If I can find a trans this hole set up maybe going under my XJ. I may have a trans for my MJ. after all. I love my truck, and thanks again for the help. -
Auto Trans swap help.
JEEP_cannible replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It would be easier, and cheaper to just rebuild or replace what I have. This I'm sue of,but were"s the fun in that? I wish I could just find a 2wd auto trans.Working, and cheap would be a plus. I'd use the Tcase out of the ford in a heartbeat.Strong enough, and it has a PTO option.Build a mount put it out of the way throw a skidplate under it.Measure 3 drive driveshafts, and have them built.New CPU,and the cord to control the trans. Done, better, and stronger than the stock units. The only problems are can't find a trans, and the nearest driveshaft shop is about 4 hours drive from me. lol -

Auto Trans swap help.
JEEP_cannible replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Its starting to sound like keeping the 5 speed, and maybe a motor swap would be the easier way to go.The WJ's 4.0 I'm sure will fit in either one just have to change alot of small parts.Sensor's,and injectors mostly.Just replace the 5 speed with one that works lol. -
Auto Trans swap help.
JEEP_cannible replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thats Good to know YJ,ZJ,WJ,XJ Its alittle confusing.Wagoneer's were wagoneers or J10's A Cj5 was a the shorter brother of the CJ7.Right now I have 1XJ a Comanche (which I assume is an XJ too) 2 WJ's one is the V8 version one the 4.0 (parts car).I also have a 79 Wagoneer ( AMC 360 TH 400),and a 78 ford Currier with early JEEP running gear converted in ( SBD CA) back in the late 70's early 80'S.I'm also looking at the Ford for parts. It has the Dana 34 front,Ford 8 3/4 rear, and the T case is the two stick version separated from the trans by its own driveshaft. This was just a thought, because the 2 wheel drive trans for the XJ is hard to find around here. Then the down time, and extra cost of having driveshafts made.It didn't seem to practical. Thanks for the help Eagle. Now I'm just wondering if the trans in the 4.0 WJ can be used in my Comanche, and if I can swap the newer T case for the better 231? This is starting to sound like alot of work. -

Auto Trans swap help.
JEEP_cannible replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thats what it said on the title.I think they call them a YJ. It has a high performance version 4.0 or 4.2 not sure haven't ran the numbers yet. The trans not sure which version, but its an auto.I do know the transfer case has the same shift pattern as my XJ,and my Comanche PU. The transfer case has a different rear nose than both the others its really short, and has an electrical hook up.Both the others don't have.
