I really don’t have a budget figured for it yet. But a really good reminder that I need to do me a plan on all mods I’m wanting to do. I originally posted so maybe I would see some things I’d like to do. At this time not looking to build a setup around a motor and drivetrain but with a lift and bigger tires maybe up to 35s I’m needing the good stuff underneath to turn them. Like I said in my original post my dad bought this before he passed and he was a simple man. Getting it running down the road was his goal and we did that. But with me having four wheel drives since I’ve been driving and have been a crash repair tech for years. I am just wanting to create something different. Anyway got the wife’s car in the shop about to paint it and then maybe I can get back on my project Thanks for your responses.

Actually the 2.8 runs really good it just has the power of the 2.8 Never was a strong engine. Even the 2.5 in my tj shows out over it. It’s just a toy and wanting to do some kind of build with it
-
That’s what I have been seeing when I find an article I just figured my two major concerns would be wiring needs and adapter for trans. Thanks for responding

Hey guys really wanting to get this 2.8 out and get this thing on the road. I know everyone has their likes I’m getting lots of suggestions from friends but now really could use it from the experts who drive them. It’s an ‘86 2.8l 5 spd manual and best option (easiest and cheapest is the 3.4 mid nineties Camaro engine When you have a moment I’d really appreciate all thoughts on what you have done or any better options. Sad thing is a swap is totally over my head I can do a lot but will have to hire out this job. This was a project my dad and I started before he passed away and now I have time to focus on it I’d really like to finish this thing. TIA and keep jeeping!!

Going to definitely start doing my research. That sounds like the way to go

Thanks I have read a little about the 3.4 swap as supposedly one of the most straightforward swaps and I'm running 4.10s on my 2.5 tj with 31s and it's not bad but figured I could do a little better running the 4.56s wanting to run 33s. This is a sentimental build so really wanting to put the time into it to make it a nice ride

There's a lot of good info here long story with my 86 and my ideal would be to drop this thing off and pick up later turn key. I can do a lot and have so far but would really like to get a point where I'm not working on it every time I get in it. Yeah I know It's still a jeep. Has the very weak stock 2.8 5sp manual. Would like to swap to a much better engine and an auto ( yeah my tj is 5sp but I'm getting old) new t sure wha gears are in it currently but goal is to run st least a 33 and have plenty of power to turn them so where's some good information that might be me through this Tia

86 2.8 5spd. Can’t get in gesr

Eagle as mentioned in my original post clutch and transmissions I have always left to the professionals. And when my dad bought this Jeep years and years ago I had to pull the trans and have it gone through. So I followed someone’s advice on the forum about vlresi g the clutch and opened the bleeder on the slave cylinder and depressed the clutch pedal and closed the bleeder. Doing this several times and I was getting good flow of fluid out the bleeder. This is a rough truck. My dad and I had gotten it for a project before he passed away and we ran it for a few years just want to get it back in the road and work some issues out to see how much I want to put into it. I’m no mechanical technician but can do a lot. My part is going to be what it looks like in the end. I’ve been a collision technician for for about 40 years. -

Thanks Cruiser. I’ll give that a try that’s not anything I have tried yet. But yeah it feels like there’s no resistance at all when depressing the clutch pedal -

Norhing like that has been done. Been sitting up for a little while but was working then. -
Outside my realm dealing with clutch and transmissions. Solved the problem of not getting fuel to the carb and new problem is that it will only crank in neutral. Won’t shift into gear with the clutch pedal on the floor. New clutch master cylinder and full of fluid. Have tried bleeding the skate cylinder a few times but still nothing. Fluid is running good when I open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. Any help will be tremendously appreciated

Really appreciating all the feed back. Yeah I probably wouldn’t be bothering with this if it wasn’t for the sentimental aspect. But really wanted to hang onto it because of my dad. Think I’ll be starting with testing the pump. I’ve got a setup of fuel to connect to the pump to see what I got there and then move onto the tank and see what’s going on back there. I do really appreciate the time you give to share this input.
-
Thanks guys I do have some things to check now. And the noise is definitely out of the pump. Just power to the pump without motor being cranked. Really feeling like my problem is a stoppage between the pump and the tank if not at the tank. And I will definitely be looking into the 3.4 swap so if anyone had anymore info on that I’d definitely love to hear it.

Yeah the jeep was running and I drove it one summer back and forth Tony he farm also a little around town. But when I started having trouble with it the flow of fuel coming to the inline filter didn’t look right. As far as the noise kinda makes me think of an old alarm clock on steroids. Just a very fast very loud metal tapping noise
