Today's update: holding off on rear fender trimming until I get a little more info and do some additional research, so I'll be reattaching the rear fenders, sans wheel-well cover. Windshield washer fluid in engine - oops
crumbscomanche replied to crumbscomanche's topic in The Pub
I think this is an understatement lol -
Came across this article today- looks like some unlucky SOB filled their Mini's engine with windshield washer fluid :hmm: pretty impressive result nonetheless. The brown mess at the top resembles something akin to head gasket failure, meaning that the oil left over in the engine had risen to the top and had been heavily diluted by the washer fluid, leaving the horrendous green glob at the bottom of the engine where the concoction will have been mostly washer fluid. Here's the link to the article: https://drivetribe.com/p/this-is-what-happens-when-you-put-eIvUyFPcRHui_6CJaEXR5w?iid=OiLpAkLaTZCAmrxzJS5gdA&utm_campaign=main+&utm_medium=fb&utm_source=organic

Got my original truck back
crumbscomanche replied to Jkics's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I had trouble at first, too, but here's what worked for me: Got to www.imgur.com and sign up for an account. From there you will be able to upload pictures, either by dragging and dropping or clicking the 'upload' button. You can create an album for the build, which will display as a feed. In the upper right hand corner of each image you will have share options. Click the down arrow on the right, and select 'Get Share Links' - copy the BBC code that is marked for forums, and paste that in to the text line here. That should make the picture show up when it is posted. -

Hacked off the front fenders today - went with the bend & fold technique. This is the first time my roommate and I have attempted any sort of bodywork on any vehicle, and we are pretty satisfied with our handiwork. We marked everything off with a sharpie, made the cuts, bent it back with our fingers, then hammered it straight. We plan on adding some fiberglass to smooth it out, then a little bit of thin, black rubber piping along the edges for trim. It looks like we netted about 1.5'' or so in clearance. We will also be gluing in a pool noodle and adding some rust protection to keep things nice and clean. Here's an up close shot of the cut: And measurements (sorry for quality): Going to do the rear tomorrow. Will have more pics then! Stay tuned! -
Beautiful little truck! I have a couple junkyards by me, let me know if i can ever help you find a part! You cover the shipping of course :laughin:

Thank you, and and congrats to you too! That'll be a hell of a drive! I have a bit of garage space, so we'll have to connect once you get back and get to work. I'll PM you now. -

Fourth of July update: Picked up a torch at Lowe's and was finally able to get the 30mm fill bolt on the t-case off. Looks like it had the factory loctite on the bolts! Will probably run the new ATF through the t-case for a month or so then drain and refill to get more of the nasty stuff out. Started working on the front fenders today, too. Got all the plastic pulled off, and have it marked up for cutting and folding tomorrow/Thursday. Will be scouring craigslist for a deal on TJ wheels and tires (shooting for a nice set of used 31s). Also going to try and remove the headliner to prep for restoration, and add in a layer of Dynamat and Reflectix. So far so good! Happy Fourth of July! -

I think so, thank you! -
Hi everyone, Thought I'd go ahead and get started on my build thread after spending my first weekend under my new 1991 'Manche! Some back story- I picked this up in June from the original owner with 512k miles. It had the motor and transmission rebuilt at 250k, and has had almost everything else replaced in the last 20k miles (clutch, ignition, alternator, etc.) It's equipped with the high output 4.0, AX15, 4x4, and the 7' long bed. It was primarily used as a commuter truck, driving weekly from socal to norcal. The original owner added a few nice touches, like a Borla header, but somethings that will need to be taken out, like the wet K&N filter, which are cruddy out in the desert. This weekend, I got her smog'd, changed the engine, diff, and tranny oil, and started cleaning everything up. Got a little stuck on the 30mm bolts for the t-case, but soaked those with pb blaster and will hopefully have that fluid changed out tomorrow. Next will be replacing the headliner, adding a lift, and some new wheels and tires. I've been reading a lot on the forums, and will also try to replace the cooling system ASAP so I don't have any issues down the line. Long term, I'd really like to turn this into a long haul desert truck. In a few years, I think it would be really fun to compete in something like the Baja race series, though I have quite a bit of work to do before she's ready for something like that . :MJ 1: . I've already gotten some very helpful advice, and look forward to learning a lot more!

thanks for all the help everyone - successfully changed out the diff and tranny fluids, and everything looked great. I am having some trouble with the 30mm t-case drain/fill bolts, but I soaked them with pb blaster today and that will hopefully make it an easy job tomorrow. The mobil1 high mileage 10w30 made a noticeable difference with shifting. Sounds and feels great! -

I'm in socal so I am more concerned about heat. It pushes 100F pretty much everyday now June-Sept. And most of the local OHV parks are at higher elevations, which is why I steered toward the synthetic. -

Cool, thank you. So to recap, I will use Mobil1 10w30 High Mileage in the AX15 (4 qts, right?), and 75w140 in the diffs. For the t-case, does it matter if it's ATF or ATF-4 in a 1991? I will probably go with Castrol or Royal Purple depending what they have in stock at AZ tomorrow. Unless anyone has something else they'd suggest I look into! Also, do the Comanches have the NP231? I appreciate all of the help, this community is extremely helpful . :MJ 1: . -

Thanks for the feedback. I run the Mobil1 10w30 High Mileage full synthetic in my engine, would that be acceptable then for the tranny AND t-case? Or do you think it'd be more advisable to use the the 75w140 I'm putting in the diffs? Also mobil1. -

Thank you, Pete. I appreciate the quick response. It's a 1991 5-Speed, so it sounds like I have the AX15. Is Redline the way to go for the fluid change? Do you happen to know what weight I'd want to go with? -
Good afternoon everyone, I am trying to ID my transmission so I can do a fluid change as a part of new ownership maintenance. I don't think the tranny of t-case fluid has been changed in the last 200k miles, since the engine and transmission were rebuilt. My understanding is that 4.0s only came with AX-15- can anyone confirm this? If so, would anyone be able to provide a link to the proper fluid? I've read that Redline is good stuff and will not ruin the synchros. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, and happy Fourth! :USAflag:

Awesome! I'll shoot you a PM. Was hoping there would be a couple people here in LA.

Welcome to the club! I have a white '92 MJ and a JKU as well ('14 Polar Edition in Hydro Blue Pearl). Make sure you start a build thread so we can all watch your progress as you build it out. Mine's going VERY slow but it'll be rewarding and fun Glad to have you here  thank you! I will be sure to do that. JKU and MJ make a great pair!

thank you both very much! and thank you for helping out with the pictures- I know I'll figure this out!! . :MJ 1: .

Hi all, I hope this is in the right place- just picked up my '91 Comanche yesterday, and wanted to introduce myself. I bought this truck from the original owner for $3k, with 512k miles (250k on the rebuild). Equipped with the 4.0I, 5-speed, 7' bed, 4x4, Borla header, and a somewhat decent sound system! I believe it has the AX-15 transmission, but will confirm as I dig deeper into the truck. Also has a Ford rear end. Great running condition with 0 rust. Not sure if the pictures below are showing up, but here are a couple links to ext. pics: http://imgur.com/gK06nLg http://imgur.com/hnUBHcR I also own a '09 JKU, but wanted something a little more unique for my summer project/trail truck. I will be tuning her up this summer, with plans to add a lift and tires in the fall. Any tips/tricks/suggestions on where to start and what to plan for would be much appreciated. Thanks for having me here, look forward to wheeling with y'all! Jacob
