  1. My son and I cheated. We backed the nut off on the passenger side and cut the head off with a sawzall. Installed a shorter bolt bought at Fastenal with the head of the bolt forward. It was very fast.
  2. Installed a cv axle after pulling the ring off. It looks different, but it fit fine. We don't do a lot of off-roading so it should be fine.
  3. We have removed the hub finally and are on to the LH drive shaft. The u-joint is rusted in worse than the hub was. We would like to replace the drive shaft but we can't find a new shaft. We can find the constant velocity ones but not one with a U-joint. Any ideas? Its a 87 4 wheel drive Laredo 4.0. Will the CV joint ones work?
  4. We got it out this morning. Rusted like you wouldn't believe. Thanks for all the suggestions and help, we used all of the methods to finally get it out.
  5. We have tried all of the methods. We broke the hatchet, mashed the socket and still can't get it out. We might have to replace the spindle and hub.
  6. We have been soaking and beating them with the sledge hammer, passenger side has a small gap on the forward edge. We were getting ready to install the manifolds and I looked at the engine mount. Drivers side looked rally bad, so we looked at the passenger side. The passenger side looked ok. Went to the auto parts store and looking at a new one they were both shot. Driverside easy to change bolts are soaking. I'm researching the passenger side now, that oil filter is really in the way. We hope to get it running tomorrow.
  7. Thank you for the picture of the socket placement. We will stop working on the hubs and reinstall the manifolds we have removed (the exhaust manifold was cracked, I think that's a feature for jeeps) and give it a try with the power steering hooked up. We'll continue to PB Blast and hope for the best. We both have to work tomorrow so we probably won't be able to try again until Wednesday.
  8. That's what i was afraid of. but I wanted to make sure before we went beyond the 2 lb ballpien hammer and the slide hammer.
  9. Hi guys love the information available here. My son and I are working on a 87 MJ Laredo 4WD. So far we have a lot replaced a lot of items referencing the forum for any help needed. We are trying to remove the front wheel hub assemblies to replace the u-joints and bearings. We have removed the 3 bolts and the axle nut, shouldn't it come off the truck? Is there something that I'm missing? We have even tried a 5lb slide hammer to no avail. I thought that it might be frozen on the axle, but the axle slides in and out. Any ideas would be appreciated.
  10. First, I would like to thank you all for the help everyone has provided to improve our 1987 Comanche Laredo. About two weeks ago my son received a gift from his Aunt and it was in fact said Comanche. We have fixed numerous problems on the Comanche including the Harmonic balancer, replaced main U joints, replaced the radiator, the serpentine belt, transmission lines and numerous other problems. None of this would have been possible without the help of this forum. Now it is time for one of our final problems-- the horn. We know that there is a relay for it but have no idea where or how to fix it. Thanks in advance for all of the help. Any general ideas are much appreciated.
