  1. Thanks guys! I’m going to give it one more go at the bearings today. Soaked em in pb. If this doesn’t work I’ll see about sourcing a newer xj axle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Hey all, I’ve got my 89 Comanche on blocks cuz I can’t get the wheel bearings out. I’ve been tinkering with the idea of upgrading to Dana 44s all around and figure it might be a good time now. Rather than keep fight just to get the bearings out to upgrade the whole assembly. My questions are: Is it a pretty straight swap? Or will there be a lot of other things along the way? Trusted brands? I’ve seen mopar floating around the net for Dana 44. But will it fit my 89? I know it will be a few thousand to do both but I’d rather upgrade than to see her sent to a junker cuz I can’t the dumb @$$ rusted bearings out. I literally spent 16 hours on the front end and only got 1 bearing out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Hey all I have an 89 comanche with the dana 35 rear axle. It's not c clip so it has the retaining plate. I had to cut the nuts off since they were rusted on. But I lost the old ones so I'm having a hell of a time finding what the nut size and thread count is. Without having to buy a tap and die set. If anyone knows I would be very grateful.
  4. Ok guys finally an update. Thanks to everyone for inputting on this. It's been a great help. It's pretty funny and embarrassing at the same time. So my axle turned out to be non c clip. Which I understand now were the standard from 87-90 or something. So after I did the rear brakes and put the wheels on it sat for a while cuz I'm crazy busy. Anyways, I made some time pulled the wheel off and the axle pretty much fell out. Result: I cut the bearing off and found a shop that could press it back on for me. So rear right axle wheel bearing is back on. Now I just need to put it all back together. My only problem is that I had to break the nuts off the retainer plate bolts. Does anyone know what threading and size the retainer plate nuts need to be? I thought I kept the old ones but it's been too long and I lost them. And if there are any people with connections to a dana 44 rear axle I'd love to get in touch. I want to upgrade both my axles.
  5. I'll post some more pics this weekend. Thanks for the help so far gents.
  6. Ya that's what I thought initially. So I took off what I thought to be the retainer plate and it was just a thin metal plate that wasn't attached to anything. So I just assumed it was c clip. Then I noticed on the diff cover it said 35 C. Which I'm assuming means c clip. I may try the pin extractor that was suggested.
  7. So I should just be able to hammer it out? I did try knocking it a bit but not with much force. Unless there is a special way.
  8. I'm not sure. It has the hole for the bolt but I've never heard of the roll pin.
  9. Thanks. I've got to put it on hold for now. Going away this weekend and gearing up my Cherokee for the trip.
  10. Took off the cap so I could get a better angle and it looks like there is no bolt in there at all. I can shine a light right through. But now my screw extractor busted inside the hole so I guess I'm drilling that out now. Is the bolt hollow? Wouldn't make any sense if it were. But the retainer pin is not coming out so there has to be something in there. Oh the joys
  11. I'll try taking off the right main cap and see if I can get a better angle at it. Updates coming. Thanks guys

  14. Went in to change out my bearings on a c clip Dana 35 and noticed the retainer pin bolt head was missing. The retainer pin is not coming out so I'm assuming there is some piece of it left in there. Not sure how to proceed. Can I pull the gears out without pulling out the retainer pin? Not sure how to post photos
  15. Thanks for all the help guys!
  16. Well the light went off on its own. I'm guessing something with the cold that wasn't allowing it to switch off. Weird
  17. Oh man! Ya I'm not complaining about the cold. Cause compared to -37 well, ya. Snow this long in Vancouver is quite rare. But it's been fun. I love how well my 88 does in the snow. Thanks for all the replies I'll be doing more investigating this weekend. So I'm out of 4hi but the light is on. As for now we have our annual Christmas house party tonight I'll post more here when I dig some more.
  18. It's an 88. Straight 6 it's not the on demand system like my 93 Cherokee has. Is that the CAD?
  19. Hey guys. So I'm in Vancouver bc and we've had crazy snow the last couple weeks with cold temps. I've been using my 4hi a bunch. It's been working great. But now when I go to shift out the light stays on. I shift in neutral reverse and go forward again and the light stays in. It comes out of 4x4 but the light stays on. I've tried all the ways but to no avail. Could it be something with the cold that cause something to stick? Is it bad to drive in 4 part time at highway speed? There's no snow on the main roads and I heard that it's not good to drive out of 4hi if the light is on. But I can't see it being good to drive in 4hi at highway speeds. Cheers guys
  20. It was the water pump. Removed the belt and started it and the noise went away. Thanks guys for the tips. Now she's back to purring. With some other quirks but I bought her to fix her.
  21. So I used my stethoscope to isolate it and it sounds like it's coming from the water pump. Not looking forward to that swap. Here's another video. https://youtu.be/dpOO7_-8H-c
  22. You're right. I have one just gotta dig it out. I'll update when I have more details.
  23. Hey all. Just signed up for the forum since I just bought my first mj. Super stoked to have her. She's an 88 with a straight 6. Low kms supposedly. Dash reads 166xxx km. I replaced the valve cover gasket since she was leaking and everything looked bright and shiny. Anyways a noise just started about 3 days ago. It's a low rattle with the occasional knock. It' sounds like it's coming from one of the front cylinders deep in the block. It's not terribly loud but it's loud enough to cause some worry. I recorded it for all to hear. Any input would be appreciated. https://youtu.be/GGwPF0sNJBY
