Can Spell Comanche

Can Spell Comanche (2/11)

  1. Thanks guys! I’m going to give it one more go at the bearings today. Soaked em in pb. If this doesn’t work I’ll see about sourcing a newer xj axle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Hey all, I’ve got my 89 Comanche on blocks cuz I can’t get the wheel bearings out. I’ve been tinkering with the idea of upgrading to Dana 44s all around and figure it might be a good time now. Rather than keep fight just to get the bearings out to upgrade the whole assembly. My questions are: Is it a pretty straight swap? Or will there be a lot of other things along the way? Trusted brands? I’ve seen mopar floating around the net for Dana 44. But will it fit my 89? I know it will be a few thousand to do both but I’d rather upgrade than to see her sent to a junker cuz I can’t the dumb @$$ rusted bearings out. I literally spent 16 hours on the front end and only got 1 bearing out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Hey all I have an 89 comanche with the dana 35 rear axle. It's not c clip so it has the retaining plate. I had to cut the nuts off since they were rusted on. But I lost the old ones so I'm having a hell of a time finding what the nut size and thread count is. Without having to buy a tap and die set. If anyone knows I would be very grateful.
  4. Ok guys finally an update. Thanks to everyone for inputting on this. It's been a great help. It's pretty funny and embarrassing at the same time. So my axle turned out to be non c clip. Which I understand now were the standard from 87-90 or something. So after I did the rear brakes and put the wheels on it sat for a while cuz I'm crazy busy. Anyways, I made some time pulled the wheel off and the axle pretty much fell out. Result: I cut the bearing off and found a shop that could press it back on for me. So rear right axle wheel bearing is back on. Now I just need to put it all back together. My only problem is that I had to break the nuts off the retainer plate bolts. Does anyone know what threading and size the retainer plate nuts need to be? I thought I kept the old ones but it's been too long and I lost them. And if there are any people with connections to a dana 44 rear axle I'd love to get in touch. I want to upgrade both my axles.
  5. I'll post some more pics this weekend. Thanks for the help so far gents.
  6. Ya that's what I thought initially. So I took off what I thought to be the retainer plate and it was just a thin metal plate that wasn't attached to anything. So I just assumed it was c clip. Then I noticed on the diff cover it said 35 C. Which I'm assuming means c clip. I may try the pin extractor that was suggested.
  7. So I should just be able to hammer it out? I did try knocking it a bit but not with much force. Unless there is a special way.
  8. I'm not sure. It has the hole for the bolt but I've never heard of the roll pin.
  9. Thanks. I've got to put it on hold for now. Going away this weekend and gearing up my Cherokee for the trip.
  10. Took off the cap so I could get a better angle and it looks like there is no bolt in there at all. I can shine a light right through. But now my screw extractor busted inside the hole so I guess I'm drilling that out now. Is the bolt hollow? Wouldn't make any sense if it were. But the retainer pin is not coming out so there has to be something in there. Oh the joys
  11. I'll try taking off the right main cap and see if I can get a better angle at it. Updates coming. Thanks guys
