It is on the column. You have to lay on your back to see it. There is a small metal rod coming from your key that pushes on a switch. Some time it needs adjusted and sometimes it needs changed.

Oh no CPS and no over drive? Thats not what I'm looking for. Thanks

Will an auto trans and t-case from a 89 4.2 bolt up to a 89 renix 4.0?
-
I know i asked once but have you messed with ignition switch yet? I went thru all this same stuff and found out the ignition switch shuts the injectors off or something. Cause mine would run all day long on starting fluid, had good fuel pressure, and great spark.
-
If you have low pressure at the rail then yes you would still have to change the pump. If your restoring it and want everything to be perfect then i guess i would replace all the stuff too. I thought you were just trying to get it running again, i didn't realize you were restoring it.
-
Before you drain the tank and lower the tank i would go to Auto Zone and get a pressure gauge. I made this same mistake, i drained my tank and changed my pump and still had the same problem.
-
I had a very similar problem with my 89. I unplugged the ignition switch under the dash on the steering column. It started so i plugged it back in and it has been fine ever since. I had spark, and fuel just like you.

If you pull the cover off is it stamped on the gears or something? Or would that be too easy

I have done plenty of motorcycles, ATVs, and Snowmobiles, But a truck is a first. Plus I'm working on it before i head in to work afternoons at 2, so time is limited right now. And on top of that its hunting season!
-
Thanks for all the help! Lots of good Info, It took some of you guys 6 hrs to do this, I think i will be luck to get it done in 6 days! But all is good as long as it gets done.

The guy sold the t-case but still has the AX-15. Will it be hard to find a t-case that will work? And will converting to a external slave setup be difficult? And you said i will need a trans mount, if you meant the mount thats not a problem. Or did you mean the cross member?
-
Wow did you pull the motor, trans, and t-case all at once? If that works, that looks alot easier than layin under it and unbolting that transmission. The XJ I'm pulling it from has front end damage already so i went ahead and pulled everything off that was left. And i started soaking stuff in PB blaster.

I am starting to pull an engine out of a 89 XJ for my 88 MJ. This is the first time i have done this and was wanting some pointers. I am no expert, but i do know how to wrench. I just sure like anything else there are some tricks of the trade that i haven't learned yet. Once i get the motor out i was going to freshen it up a bit before reinstalling it. And then i still have to make a decision to make on the trans. Oh by the way the motor is a Renix 4.0 5speed 4x4. Thanks!

I'm not sure what all it comes with, the guy was asking $250. Don't know if thats a good deal, or should i keep looking?

I have been looking around for an auto trans, since the last post. And along the way i found a 96 AX-15 with a NP231. I do know 96 was an off year for jeeps. But will one of the bolt up and work correctly with my 89 Renix motor, that had a BA-10 bolted to it? Or am i starting in on more problems. I know I'm asking alot of dumb questions but I'm just trying to find the easiest and best way to swap this motor and trans over with out have to redo stuff later.
-
I'm replacing a 4.0 in my MJ that is already an auto, but the motor I'm putting in it is out of a XJ that was a 5speed. I'm also converting my MJ to 4x4, Will my factory ECU in the MJ work?
-
OK what does a trans controller do, and were is it? And what about a speed o meter. Aren't some controlled by a cable and some by wire?
-
When you say a later 23sp do you mean 92+? I guess what I'm asking will a newer auto trans, bolt up?
-
Should i buy a transfer case at the same time too. Or will the one on my 5speed work? I am unsure what kind of transfer case i actually have.
-
Is there any type of Auto trans that is stronger or better than others?
-
I have an 88 MJ with a 4.0, Auto, 2wd. I just bought a 89 XJ 4.0 5 speed, 4x4. The guy told me it was a 90 and after the 2.5 hour drive i found out it was a 89 and didn't have the ax-15 trans i was hopping for. SO i still want to make my MJ a 4x4, but i don't want to waste my time with the crappy trans, i would rather keep the auto anyways since this is gona be a daily driver to and from work. My question is, will my new transfer case out of the 89 XJ bolt to my 88 auto trans in my MJ. Or will i need to find a 4x4 auto trans?

I was thinking the SOA because i thought i could save a little cash by doing this. But i never realized that it would give so much lift, and the cost to get the front up to par may be to much. But i do want to thank you all again you all have very good info and i will be a great in helping me make my decision.
-
No there is nothing wrong with a 3" lift and 31" tires. Thats just what i have now and was wanting to build the new one a little taller. I was just wanting some input on a SOA lift and how it handles. I still have some time to think about it.
-
WOW thanks for all the info! The truck will be driven daily to work, on the weekends i plan on doing some mild wheelin, and a hunting truck during the winter months. As far a hauling, a quad would be the most i would haul in it. I was wanting to run the 33s cause it just looks cool. The truck was a 4.0 2wd auto and I'm changing all that, thats how I'm getting the 3.55 gears. SO i guess my next question how much of a lift does a SOA give you? Will 33s look ok? Or is that too much of a lift?
-
A spring over seems like the best way to go. Am I right of should i do a normal lift with new spring packs. I do plan on driving this on the road, will a SOA hurt my street driving.
