  1. But now I have found a bad valve. I did a compression check and the rear cylinder was only making 60 PSI. I then did a leak down test and the rear cylinder was 30/70. I pulled the head and the valves don't look too bad. The valve guides are okay too. I think if I re-cut the seats and grind the valves. it will be fine. I am now questioning if I should just pull the engine. I'll start a new thread..........
  2. Thanks, I'll see if I can get it online from them. Nearest O'Reilly's is 45 miles away.
  3. Hello, I'm finally getting to some much needed repairs on the 1986 Comanche X 2.5 manual transmission truck I bought a year ago. I bought a aluminum Valve cover, a bunch of gaskets, hoses, and have some parts I took off of my Jeep JK that I will recycle into the suspension like a set of RK 2.5" coils and some Bilstien remote reservoir shocks. I am having trouble finding the throttle body gasket. Does anyone know where to get one? None of the usual places like Summit, Dorman, or Crown seem to have it. I have had really good luck finding everything from Summit. I usually search the Crown or Dorman number and it comes right up. I usually need enough things to get the free shipping. It appears that the gasket comes with a new fuel injector. Should I just get one? I have no reason to think mine is bad, but I have not checked the spray pattern and the truck does have 190K miles on it. Here's the injector that appears to come with gaskets: http://www.morris4x4center.com/fuel-injector-2-5l-engine-83504851.html But it says "Parts Included:(1) Crown Fuel Injector" So who knows? The same part at Summit shows just the part in the picture. Any help would be appreciated, and yes, I have read the Renix tips, didn't find what I was looking for, but found a lot of other good tips that I will do.
  4. I don't care much if the light works or not. I mentioned it because I would have expected to see some indication and was not sure where that would be since I have never seen it work. I may do the CAD fix to see that everything does actually function in the axle, but I will buy the cable set up as a permanent fix. I would rather not have the drive line always engaged. I also like the fact that with the cable, I would also have a 2 low option. It is a nice thing to have for stuff like precision trailer backing or pushing aircraft and helicopters in and out of my hangar. Not my first old school 4WD. And like I said previously, not really caring if the light works, but may fix it anyways because I usually fix broken stuff, even if it is not very useful. I also will be loaning this to my mom sometimes, and it may be driven by others too.

  6. Old water line? How much does that weigh? I am thinking of building something similar to carry a canoe, long boards, or ladders, but will buy something lighter and easier to work with. If you were eventually looking for some roll over protection from this, additional bracing won't matter. No part of a roll structure should be made from pipe, it needs to be tubing. There's a big difference.
  7. Yep, mud tires suck in a lot of types of snow, but I have other Jeeps to drive and usually have good snow tires on the Commander because it's what we go over the passes in. The types of snow the Comanche will mostly see is melting slush over mud with ruts. Skinny mud terrains will work good for that.
  8. Thanks. Checking this out today. My Comanche is an '86, not sure what I was thinking when I typed '85. I suspect vacuum leaks due to the fact I can't get hot air to blow out the heater vents either. De-frost is fine, it just won't switch to vent. If it wasn't freezing out, and with 4 inches of snow, I would de-grease the engine and under the body. It's pretty messy fro years of leaks. I like clean stuff. I may leave it parked for a few days until I get some stuff done in my hangar and can pull it in there to work on it.
  9. My new to me 2.5 liter 5 speed 1986 (edited, sorry, not an 85) Comanche X won't go into 4 wheel drive. The are no noises from the Transfer case, it does engage low range, but does not drive the front wheels. A couple times I got a neutral in 4 low, but other times it engages low but does not drive the front axle. There is no indication in the dash as to if it is in four wheel drive. I assume the indicator would be on the right light cluster where the up shift light is. I have read a bit about the vacuum lines having something to do with engaging the front axle. I have searched this forum and else where and have not found a good guide on the subject. I have not figured out if I have an NP 231 or NV 231 transfer case, or what the difference is.
  10. I was mistaken on my current size. I have 265/75/15, not 70 series as I posted. so 30 x 10.5 is what they should measure. I think I'll look for some mud terrains in a 30x9.5x15. BF Goodrich TA KM2's come in that size, but I wouldn't mind something cheaper since this will not be a daily driver, it will rarely need to go over 50 mph, and won't ever go more than 100 miles in a day.
  11. I have the Rusty's 2" lift and it looks good with this size tire. There is a very small amount of rubbing in reverse at full steering lock and that's it, so not a problem. I drove in 4 inches of fresh wet snow, the stuff we call "Cascade concrete" around here. I was barely able to climb my driveway, and it really struggled to hook up on hills in my neighborhood. I has 265/70/15 snow tires on after market wheels. I have a stock set of 89 Cherokee wheels with snow tires coming my way, not sure what size yet. My father in law used them one season and put them in his shed. My guess is the tires are no good. So, I think I will buy some tires. I am thinking same height as the 265/70's that are on it, but I would like to go narrower. I think a 245 or 235 80 would work, if I could find such a thing. I would like to get a pretty aggressive tread for it. With the 265's, it feels like the truck is too light and floats on the top of the snow. The 2.5 isn't exactly a powerhouse, so it doesn't have the power to spin the snow out of the tread (at least that's how it feels) I think smaller tires might be the answer. I am not going to go wheeling in this Jeep other than necessary type stuff I encounter living in the woods, like muddy forest service roads when I cut wood. Any suggestions? Anyone got pictures of tires they like of their MJ? D.
  12. So whats the best transmission oil for my 5 speed? I heard the GL3 thats specified is hard to find. I have not tried yet. I am ordering a manual for it today for torque specs and capacities.
  13. 10/30 oil it is then, thanks. As far as my other parts questions, thanks for that too. I am used to digging, I've owned some weird and cool stuff over the years.
  14. Hello, I just bought a 1986 Comanche X with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual. It also has the 7 foot bed. It is in pretty good shape and is mostly all stock. I think it may have the Rusty's suspension 2 inch lift kit in it, it seems slightly taller and had Rusty's shocks and steering stabilizer. I plane to keep it pretty much stock. I also have a JK Unlimited Rubicon with a ton of mods, and a Hemi Commander on Old Man Emu suspension. I bought the Comanche for lumber store runs, hauling yard stuff, and other pickup truck duties. I've drove it 3 hours to get it home from where I bought it, and it's a cool little truck. All 3 of my Jeeps are silver too, matched set. I have some questions: Where is a good place to buy stock replacement parts? The hose from the air box to the throttle body has a rip. I can make a universal hose work, but I thought I would also try to find a OEM one for the best fit and quality (maybe on the quality) I would also like new turn signal lenses. There are cracks in a few of mine and the are pretty faded. There is some other stuff I need to fix to make really nice, headliner is missing, seat has a few small rips and the foam kind of sucks, horn button is missing, and I would like to replace all the weather stripping. What oil do these little 2.5 engines like? I am guessing they are not too picky. I have not had a small American engine before. I have had many European cars from the 70's and 80's and ran Castrol 20/50 in the summer and 10/40 in the winter with good results. I found that the recommended oil is 10/30. Should I stick with that? I think I will change the engine oil tomorrow and maybe the gearbox, transfer case and diff's too. I also have to bleed the clutch and flush out the brake fluid. I am an over maintainer. I take care of a Eurocopter EC 135 Medevac Helicopter as a job, and fix, maintain and modify small airplanes and helicopters as a side business in my hangar. I have to say that this is one of the nicer forums I have looked at as far as the posts and replies. I hardly look at the Jeep JK forums due to off subject posts and constant flaming and harassment between members. I am glad I found this forum. David Chelan WA.
