Ignition Lock Cylinder 97+
buckwheat replied to buckwheat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Alright. Sounds like i will just keep my two keys for now then. Thanks for your answers guys. -
I've been looking at a lot of threads and haven't noticed an answer yet. Will the ignition lock cylinder from a 97+ Jeep Cherokee fit in the stock column of my 87 Jeep Comanche? I am doing the 97+ door upgrade and would love to have a single key for doors and ignition.

Patience, one of the many many virtues I do not have. :P But thanks for the words of wisdom, I will wait and see what I can find. -

The only panels I have seen are for electric locks and windows. That wouldn't work with my manual windows and locks would it? -
I've been looking for some 97 Cherokee doors to swap to my 87 Comanche for a while. Found a pair of manual doors. (I want manual versus electric doors, less things to worry about breaking.) The only problem is they do not come with the inner door panel. I spent some time googling and could not find a place that sells replacement inner door panels. What options do I have for replacements? (I'm hoping there is a magical site I missed that has all the parts I need.) If finding a replacement panel is out, has anyone made their own? I think it would be cool to customize things like where the arm rest is and what angle it sits at, but I am not sure what it could be made out of, nor where to start. Basically, anyone have any words of wisdom for me? Thanks in advance!

Need to Replace Ball Joints.
buckwheat replied to dinghyboy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
But you'd need to take the front axle out to get access to the needle fitting. It's easier to just grease it well when you install it, then replace the zerk fitting with the supplied plug. I used to Moog brand when I did mine. Installed them and greased them well. But I kept the 90 degree zerk fitting that came with it in my glove box. Whenever I change my oil I unscrew the plug from the lower joint, rotate my axle shaft until I can fit the zerk back in, and regrease them. Takes me 5 minutes and should add quite a bit of life to the joint. Just my 2 cents. -
Well I have found http://topeka.craigslist.org/cto/4591087864.html I think I'm going to go look at them. Both have AC and should have spare parts galore. If they are not rusted out (hopefully not in Topeka) then they may solve my problems. Anyone have any thoughts? (Sorry if this is straying too far from the intent of the Wanted Forum.)

I have an 87 MJ 4.0L base model. It has no AC, badly done front clip, rusted fenders, and a hood with rivet holes in it. Plus the PO put bucket seats in using plywood instead of rails.....the list goes on. To that end I think it would be easiest if I could find an XJ/MJ as a parts vehicle. I would like the donor vehicle to have 4x4, manual transmission, manual windows and locks, buckets seats, and AC. Since I am trying to use parts on my 87, I'm thinking it needs to be an 87-90 so that everything will match. (If I am wrong about this, let me know.) Something with a blown motor would be great, since that would bring the price down, and my motor seems to be in good shape. I feel like I am asking a lot already, but if the front clip could be complete and in good condition that would be great as well. If anyone has any leads, please message me. Thanks! **I also wanted to take a moment and thank everyone on this site for taking the time to answer questions thoroughly, in detail, and most importantly correctly. I have been skulking around reading everything that I come across and have learned a TON. So thanks, and I hope you all can help me here.

New Ignition Cylinder Problem
buckwheat replied to buckwheat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
After I cooled down some I went back out and tried a few more things. It will turn, but you have to treat it like a bump key. Put the key in, smack it with your fist, then it will turn. So I am thinking the install was fine, and its the "new" ignition cylinder that is the problem. -
I am in the process of installing a new ignition cylinder into my 87 MJ. I was following http://comancheclub.com/topic/18991-ignition-lock-removal/. The install seemed to be going well (besides me bending the hell out of the snap ring that holds the lock plate down), until I tried to turn the key. It won't budge from the lock position. What did I do wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

Great, thanks Red Rocker. Now, I just need to find a junkyard with MJ or XJ parts. Not as common as one would think in my area.

I purchased an 1987 MJ 5 speed with the 4.0L a month or so back. It had the basic gauge cluster (speedometer and large gas gauge) with idiot lights for everything else. I upgraded to a renix style gauge cluster with oil pressure, tach, volt etc. No more idiot lights. Plus a tripometer which I had really missed. Anyways . . . The problem is the gas gauge in the new cluster is pegged out and won't move. I have disconnected the sending unit wire from the gas tank to see if the needle on the gauge would move and it doesn't. Also tested the sending unit while I had it unplugged and it worked fine. (Numbers jumped around a bit on my ohm meter, but was more or less correct to the level of fuel I had.) This leads me to believe that the gauge is dead, correct? As for fixes, can the gauge be repaired? Does a replacement exist? I do not want another gauge outside of the cluster in the dash. Anyone have ideas for me? Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for all the ideas and thoughts danbyrambler I live in 65340. Also thanks for your searching ti[. That will most likely save me a lot of time. cruiser54 I looked at your Renix Tips link. However, I am very hesitant to start cutting and drilling on engine pieces. Could you explain better what cutting and drilling these tubes will do and why it is not harmful to my engine? Perhaps there is a link where I could read more? Thanks again for the info. If you have anything else I can use, feel free to send it my way.

Came across this post while browsing how to fix oil dripping from my air filter: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1184602 What do you all think about this? Is it an ok idea and would it fix my problem of oil leaking out my air filter? Its an 87 Comanche 4x4 with I-6. Its my first Jeep, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around how some of the mechanics work.

Thanks for the offer, but I believe another member has one. Hopefully I will get it in a few days. Should I delete this thread, or is there some other way to show that it is finished?

Marshall specifically. Springfield would be a ~2 hour drive one way. I might look into it if nothing pops up here. Is there a yard you recommend?

I have an 87 Comanche, and would like to get a gauge cluster with a tach, oil pressure, engine temp, etc. Since it is pre 91, the speedo connection needs to be mechanical. If anyone has it and is willing to sell, let me know. Thanks.
