Well, here's what happened, after the initial " thunking" sound, it then sounded like there where rocks in the diff, a rattling sound as i drove, after I pulled over, I then noticed I no longer had reverse. So I turned around and went back home but on the way, on top of the " rattle sound, it then started making a "whirling" from the diff that got louder and louder, and then snap, the drive shaft broke. so we tied the drive shaft up tp the frame and towed it home, but while being towed, it was still making the rattling sound from the diff. Since getting it home, i got under it today, ( only briefly though) , pulled off the diff cover and the diff oil is a pitch black tar. so i can't even see the gears through that muck. how would you recomend cleaning it all off? and is it worth it to look into repairing this axle, or should I just start searching the junk yards for a new one?

ok, so i looked, and its a dana 35, but i havnt gotten under her yet so i don't know the gears. now this may sound realy dumb, but lets say I go to the pull and save yard and find another comanche with a dana 35 but a differant gear ratio, could i not use it anyways? or does it have to be an exact match?

its a 2.5 with the 5 speed, that means probably 4.10?

Hey all, well, on the way home yesterday, I had a loud noise and some "thunking" come from the rear dif, then the driveshaft ripped from the ubolt!!! :mad: so now I'm needin a new rear end, gonna go to the junk yard, so how do i find out what rear end I have? how many did they make for these old jeeps? ( just bought it a week ago so I know nothing about it) thanks

I needed a new farm truck, so $350 later, here she is, though I like her so much, I may make it my new project truck. 87 long box laredo. 2.5L. Shes an ugly beast, but I love her non the less. :cheers:

ok,here's what i found out so far, the title says 87, the title matches the vin, but the info plate inside the drivers door says 86, hmmmmmmmmmm.

tried that, but the lever doesnt want to go farther then 4, what could be wrong?

Hey all, just got my first mj ( my first jeep for that matter) She is an 87 long bed. It says laredo on the side, but it also says xjs on the other fender, arnt comanche's mjs? so is it realy a laredo? can ya tell? don't know if the badges are right or not. anyways, got it for $350, it runs great but its ugly as spit. its got 166,000 miles and its missing the tailgate,other then that,iut seems ok.She has the 2.5 and a 5 speed. its gonna be my all around work truck for now, but in the future, who knows. since i sold my bronco, I'm left without a project truck, so this may be my new one, tell me what ya think. what do these buttons do by the way? oh, and how do i engage 4L? in my bronco, it had to be in N then shift down to 4 low, but it doesnt seem to work in the jeep. thanks, tell me what ya think of her
