IAC woes ... at least I believe it's IAC
eacomanche88 replied to BLHTAZ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just a question Brent, Does the shop your at still have a DRB I? It's the real small one that pre 90 Jeeps will work on. There is a actuation test you can do to check the IAC. you can raise and lower the idle with the scanner. If the idle does not change, stuck IAC. I Have worked in Chrysler/ Jeep dealers since 1987. Had to shake the cobwebs out on this one. P.S. My 88 does the same exact thing. -
The following issues is with a BA 10/5 4WD with 195K O.K. I was driving my 1988 on the freeway in fifth gear going about 65 mph and I smelled gear oil. Thinking I blew a axle seal or pinion seal I pulled off the exit and took a peek. The diff and driveshaft and exhaust and right inner tire was dripping wet of oil. So i drove slowly home and really looked to find the source. the axle is ruled out due to the driveshaft and muffler more foward and soaked .But the gas tank side is dry, its only wet on the pass side. Transfer case has ATF so thats out to. I noticed the passenger side of trans is wet. I drove to work and noticed the trans was noisier than usual, so I had to pull the shifter to fill the trans due to stripped fill plug  and cleaned off everything and now have driven it all week and no more leak! However, when it's on the highway, I smell gear oil andwhen I slow down and the smell goes away, around town nothing, dosn't do it. trans is now quiet and no visible holes or missing parts. Sorry for the long sob story, but i'm stumped I was hoping someone else has seen this? I know automatics has a vent, but does the pukegoat? I know axles and tranny's have vents to relive internal pressures caused by moving parts but is the vent on the pass side? and what could cause it to to so? I know, I know its a crappy trans, But it's my DD and I need to play the cards i'm delt at the moment until the money tree I planted grows bigger in the backyard.

31 Inch Spare Tire?
eacomanche88 replied to summerinmaine's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a 32-10.5-15 under mine on a Explorer steel wheel and fits fine. Its been under there for 2+ years now without issue. -
I had never heard of iron rock so I took a look at their site. The arm brackets to the frame will work on the MJ? it says on their site it bolts to the factory lower control arm bracket on the XJ. Is their one for the MJ and did not see it?

I was wondering about how many could be left? Just this weekend I had gone to a salvage yard and saw 5 there, and that is just 1 junkyard. I know Jeep made a little over 190,000 units, I see on here and elsewhere MJ's are being stripped of parts and scrapped due to damage and rust. I'm sure over the course of 20+ years thousands have gone to the crusher from accidents, and such. I just could not help but to wonder the number of them still around. Thanks for letting me ramble!!

wire harness swap question
eacomanche88 replied to twojeeps's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was told that if you have 91+ dash and harness it would not work in 87-90 vechicles due to the renix/chrysler gig. Am I correct? Because I to have a 91 dash to put in my 88. -
I have a question that I hope someone may have an answer, there is a post from shdbriding about him finding a MJ in a junkyard that has a factory brushguard. I looked in my refrence books and could not find a picture. Does anyone have a pic or know of a website I could see a picture? Thanks Eric

I just installed a 8.8 in my MJ this week, the rear end I had gotten had the pinion flange adapter on it, (they torched off the shaft). I removed the old 1330 joint and bought a 1330/1310 conversion joint at a auto parts store. (if you need a part # just google 1310 to 1330 conversion joint ) and my stock driveshaft worked great. The flange yoke does need to be off of a 8.8 to work off an Explorer or Ranger from what I was told

JEEP just empty every pocket
eacomanche88 replied to sweetpea!'s topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If there was gas in the oil it could have been caused by a injector stuck open washing down one (or more) cylnders. As it was running the gas washed away any oil for the wrist pin on the piston, now causing a knock at idle in the engine. If you start the Jeep and the knock is at idle, pull off one spark plug wire at a time, if the knock goes away when you pull a wire off, you have found the cylnder causing the issue. This has worked for me in the past and does not cost anything to check out yourself! -
Installed the new RCX drop brackets and installed (finally) the 8.8 rear end this week. The drop brackets are very well made and went together very easy. I have about 5.5" of lift so I took out my Rubicon express lower arms and installed the stockers. The ride is AMAZING! Best 200.00 spent. Also installed a Explorer 8.8 rear end 3.73 posi with discs. Rear end: 3.73 posi with discs and pinion adapter- FREE :brows: Spring perches, shock tabs,u-bolts/plates: Ruff Stuff Specialties:110.00 Rear axle shaft bearings and seals and oil 40.00 Chrome diff cover: 20.00 (40+h.p. over stock cover) ;) 1310 to 1330 u-joint:15.00 Throwing in the garbage the stock Dana 35:Priceless  [/img] /img] [/img]

eacomanche88 replied to Beachbum1236's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I rembered one more (lived in Jersey for 30 years) "Diamond Jims Jeep Parts" he is in Mt. Holley N.J. phone # 1-609-654-5070. I went to his place about 3 years ago with my 88 Jeep YJ Sahara for parts, he had a lot of CJ, YJ stuff, but he may also have MJ,XJ to. -

There is a place in South Jersey called "Sam the Jeep Man" He's off the Garden State Parkway aroundexit 80 or so, about 50 miles north of Atlantic City. He has tons of Jeep parts from early CJ's to present. I couldn't find a number, but Google the name to get one. -
I just bought a 91 XJ 2 door Laredo 4x4 with a hole in the 4.0 for $300, it has the overhead console with the compass and temp. It looks to be a little long for the cab of the MJ, but has anyone modified one to fit and possibly a pic? Thanks for any help.

What model Comanche do I have?
eacomanche88 replied to eacomanche88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok, again thanks for the wealth of info all you have. So I did the Chrysler route and waiting to hear back. I also went to CARFAX and to my suprise  JeepcoMJ is right on the nose! It came back as a Eliminator! So someone took the time and did it right because I couldn't tell. Shame someone took a desiresble truck to convert it to 4wd. I will post again if the Chrysler info changes. Thanks again!!!!!!! -

What model Comanche do I have?
eacomanche88 replied to eacomanche88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the info and help!!! The 8th digit on the vin is an S so that makes it a Chief. I have seen pictures in books of the Chief model. I would like to get the lettering/stripes that run along the bottom of the truck. -
Hello, this is my first post and could use some help. I have a 1988 4wd shortbed 4.0 5spd, the rollbar looks factory (by the way it mounts) It has bucket seats, full console,pw,pl,tilt,a/c, seems pretty loaded with options. I pulled off the armrest on the door and it says Pioneer/Chief for the panel trim. I am just curious which it could be? The truck is originally black but has been repainted so any original stripes are gone. I have owned the truck for a year now and LOVE it. I have owned 15+ Jeeps in my life and this is my 1st MJ. Any assistance or feedback would be great! Thanks!! Oh by the way, the front and rear diff has 3.73 gears, Factory? Eric
