Is my t-case about to die?

I noticed today that when I put my truck (86 model with 207 transfer case) in 4low it sounds alot different than 2hi and 4hi. It is much louder and makes kind of a whinney noise (I know thats a bad description). 4hi sounds just like 2hi. Does this mean I should start shopping for a new t-case? I checked the fluid and its full and recently changed.

Low range will always sound different then high. When you say whinny do you mean like reverse sounds when you go real fast backwards? If so this is normal. A lot of low range gears and older transmission reverse gears are not helical they are straight cut gears. These straight cut gears are a lot louder. I think the NV 3550 is one of the first Jeep trannys to have helical reverse. Ever here a Dana 300? All straight gears inside, much stronger but can sound like a bucket of bolts just fell in your T/C. Listen for popping, clicking, snapping and grinding noise. The whining you described I don’t think is an issue. Check your T/C fluid just to be sure, most problems will show them selves in the fluid.

Shew, thats a relief. Thanks for the info. I was just worried because in my chilton manual it states that if there is "noise" in 4lo only, the t-case needs replaced.

 

It does sound like going in reverse fast. Thats a great example. I guess chilton must be referring to another "noise".
