Lee21490
So over the last few days i've smelled a slight burning electronics smell, Looked around never found anything. Last night i went to go to the store, Noticed a little smoke & more burning smell, Pulled over tore my dash apart a little, Found two wires coming off the blinker relay fuse box? That were spliced into a single, Heavier gague wire.. It was partially melted & smoking. Ripped it apart, Checked all my lights/etc found out it was for my turn signals (Hazards still work). I have no clue why it was spliced like that, P/O must have done it. No idea why it just now started shorting out, and didnt even blow a fuse. The entire dash/front harness is out of a 95 jeep xj I'll run to the hardware store & pick up a voltmeter as i just broke my last one lol Any ideas people? The three wires in that pic were together, wrapped in electrical tape.
Megadan
Look at all that corrosion. Not even soldered. Good thing you caught it when you did instead of realizing there was a problem while the truck was on fire.

Good thing you caught it when you did instead of realizing there was a problem while the truck was on fire. Actually that corrosion is from the last 12~ hours, It was clean copper when i ripped it apart last night lol Not exactly sure how to get my turn signals working now though :( There is two wires in each of the cables coming off the relay box, What i'm assuming is a ground & another smaller sheilded wire inside (The red one). Not sure how the P/O Had it hooked up. /e Update: Threw a voltmeter on the wires, The two coming off the relay are 12v, Even the sheilding that i thought was ground. The big cable has 0v Now i'm even more confused. Last update. P/O Is an IDIOT! Looks like for some strange reason he cut a chunk of that wire out, Then it was too short so instead of getting a same / thicker gague wire.... Drum roll please..... He used two TINY wires, wrapped them together & hooked it up like that. So i guess what happened is, It started to corode a little, causing the already small wire to be even smaller letting less current through, Causing more heat, which made the issue even worse.. Until finally it was hot enough to start melting. I put a properly sized wire & connected it correctly, Everything works fine now, No issues. Feel kinda stupid for making a thread for somehing this dumb/easy lol ~_________________~
Megadan
Eh, better a dumb thread to try and get it right than no thread and doing it dumb. Glad you figured it out.
