Auto Transmission leak

Recommended Posts

I've been battling a leak on my son's 1986 model with the 904 automatic.  After a few days of sitting it begins leaking transmission fluid.  I've replaced the pan gasket twice and recently just put a brand new pan on.  Same thing...leaked a few days after installation.  i don't believe it's leaking from the pan as when i pull the pan down there's still alot of fluid coming out.  WIth that, is there a seal on the dipstick tube going into the tranmission?  I haven't looked at that yet because I'm currently away from home but I suspecting a leak from somewhere else.

I mentioned there's still plenty of fluid when I pull the pan.  I believe the leak is up higher than the pan gasket area because once it gets to point the leak stops.  Perhaps just below the dipstick tube?

I'll take any ideas you guys have.  I've had jeep's (CJ's and now my second Rubicon LJ) all my life but this is my first comanche and I bought it for my 16 year old son.

Thanks!

Thanks!  I don't believe it's the breather as it just sits for now while we're doing some work to it.  It hasn't been driven more than out of the garage and onto the driveway.  When I get home I'll pull the tube from the housing and replace the o-ring.

I'm thinking a coolant line shouldn't be leaking as the are up too high for a sitting truck to leak.  If it had been driven, I look at the lines and breather too.  I just wasn't sure if there was an o-ring on the tube, but I thought there might be.

Thanks again.

I didnt notice the sitting part sorry. Also what about where the cooler lines go into the tranny they have those crappy quick disconnect fittings I have had them drip to when sitting. Theres a write up some where on the net about taking them out and using direct fit brass fittings I do know there metric threads.
