JDub
Does anybody out there have a video or pictorial of changing a speedometer cable on a 1989 mj/xj? I am having problems changing it out on my 89 cherokee Laredo. I have never had to do this with either of my jeeps before and I know it should be fairly simple, I'm having problems with getting the cluster out. There is what appears to be a short cable about a foot long coming out ot the cliuster with black coupler with an electrical connecter on the side of it with another cable connected on the opposite side of the short cable. is this the speedo cable. I have got the cable disconnected from the transfer case and the push on clip holding about middle ways of the cable off and all the screws out holding cluster in place and I still can't get the cliuster to slide out. Any help would be greatly apprecieated! Thanks!
Fernando87mj
Does your jeep have cruise control ? If so yours will have two cables , iirc there is a short end that goes from the speedometer to the cruise control thing idk what it's called or coupler as what you called it , disconnect the cable that goes from the speedo to the black coupler . My jeep doesn't have cruise so I can't show a picture , but I did work on a cherokee that did have cruise . Iirc There's a nut that connects the cable to the black coupler . Remove that nut and and if you can pull the cable out and that should allow you to pull the cluster .
JDub
Thanks Fernando87mj, No, it doesn't have cruise control, but for some reason has that type of speedo cable. my speedo quit working so I assumed it was the cable. at the time I bought my cable at O'reillys I didn't know I had this style of cable and they didn't ask me anything about it and it looks like the lower cable. Do you know where I can find the upper cable? I've been on the phone trying to locate one but no luck thus far. Thanks!
Fernando87mj
If you don't have cruise control then I doubt it's going to have 2 cables , both of my Comanches don't have cruise control and have a 1 piece cable , do you know if your jeep maybe had the cruise control removed ? JDub
No, Mine has a small cable about a foot long from the back of the speedo to a little round deal with an electric wire on the side of it with a longer cable connected to it going to the trans. After messing with it a while I was able to get the cluster out. both cable don't seem to be broken in any way. I tested the speedo with a drill and it works. reckon the thing in the transfer case that the cable connects to could be bad? Also, any ideas on how to get the rubber (through the firewall) grommet off the old cable?
