The Barn Mj Projects

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been lurking awhile on the site and figured I would go ahead and share my current projects.  I didn't mean to, but ended up having 2 MJ's going at once as projects.

The first one is a white 89 pioneer, auto, 4x4 that was my first truck back in 92. I kept it all the way up to a few years ago at which point I sold it (and regretted it as it left the yard).  I told the guy I sold it to that it had seeping injectors, but he didn't fix them and a few months after buying it, it suffered an engine bay fire, destroying all wiring in the engine bay, and unfortunately resulted in a locked up motor as well.  I’m guessing a fire hose was used on it and the water was never drained.  I saw it about a year later still sitting at his shop and asked him about it, and ended up buying it back at a discounted rate.   I decided just to stay stock Renix and found a 90 model XJ donar for cheap and swapped out the wiring harness, and all engine bay items.  I got a low mileage motor from a 92 and swapped it in along with a 95 model master cylinder.  I got everything running and just need warmer weather to paint a replacement grill and the top of the driver’s fender that was damaged by a prybar the firemen had to use to open the hood after the release melted.

The second project was not really planned.  It’s a 2wd 90 pioneer, manual 4.0 130,000 miles.  This truck was sitting at a house next door to my in-laws and I talked to the owner about buying the back bumper off it and ended up with a truck attached to the bumper sitting at my house.  As you can see from the pictures it was a bit mossy when I first picked it up, but a quick wash job while still on the trailer made me realize this one wasn’t too bad after all.   Current status on it, had to swap a fuel pump into it, fix the 4 completely loose bolts in the tilt column, and now I’m trying to track a gremlin in the starting circuit, the starter would turn over but now it won’t, and I’ve tested the starter and it’s still good.  It’s still fighting me on wanting to crank.

I got the 90 model running yesterday.  It ends up that the starter was fine but the solenoid was actually bad on the starter, once I put in a new one, and changed out the original spark plugs that were burnt down to a nub, with just a little more work it fired off quickly.  I had to change out the front rotors and calipers, then took it for a run up the road, the manual seems to shift fine and it drives pretty smooth.  The temporary fuel pump will need replacement as I now remember why that pump was sitting on a shelf, it was going out and it's very loud.  Now that I have the 90 mobile and can get it in and out of the shop under power, I've decided to park it, until I get the 89 finished and back on the road.  It's bad, I have 3 4x4's sitting in the shop and none of them are roadworthy right now, so I need to get the 89 finished.
