Bob Salemi, the guy in Rhode Island who runs the pro stock MJ, did exactly that on his daily driver XJ. It came out very nicely. I don't have pics, but he did just what you propose -- filled in the upper corners, mounted the header to the fenders, than filed and sanded down the corners to blend into the contours of the fenders.
