mvusse
If you've had plates on it, the registration that went along with those plates is enough proof. It will have your name AND the vin on it.

mvusse
My name is Marcel. He was asking me if I was slipping on them, as I'd already asked pretty much the same question earlier AND got an answer. But I didn't remember I had.
flint54
I recently had a similar issue with a motorcycle. I took the bike to the DMV, had them read the VIN to verify, and they sent a form letter to the previous registered owner requesting them to contact me. I provided my contact information, plus a note offering a reward for their troubles. Within a week I got the call I needed, drove an hour to meet them at their local DMV, and the title transfer was resolved. There is also the possibility of having a LEO look up the VIN, but they're not really supposed to provide the personal info, just whether or not the vehicle has ever been reported as stolen. Good luck!
