My understanding is that all timing advance is done by the ECU on my 2.5L, referring to this thread:

What mechanical part is advancing? It appears to me the entire distributor shaft from where it's splines meet the camshaft up to where the rotor sits is one fixed piece with no rotating parts (relative to each other... it all spins together). What am I missing?

There's no mechanical advance. It's all electronic.

 

But what advances? Just the timing of the spark? Or does the rotor spin at a different rate than the splines at the camshaft?

Thanks Geonovast, that will help me figure out my problem. My searches on here and google didn't give me a clear answer to how electronic timing worked.
