long arm question

Recommended Posts

I have a old rockkrawler 3 link long arm. Would it be possible to weld brackets on long arms for the upper control arms to bolt in factory location so ican have 4 link. thanks

Should work fine.

We built a 'mid-length' arm setup on an Xj a few years ago and did exactly that.

We would remove one of the uppers while offroad as it removes some stress off the upper axle mounts. I have HEARD that a setup like Rubicon Express (not downing them I love their stuff) LA's that the uppers have been known to rip off the UCA axle mounts.

I have even seen (first hand) a 2 link setup...3 link if you count the trackbar. 2 control arms is all you use. 1 side is fixed to the axle. The other side is the pivot. Works well and is fairly stable at speed too.

Any upper control arm (for a jeep) should work.

Again looking at a long arm 'lift kit' I believe the upper arms for an LA setup are the same upper arms you would use for a regular short arm lift. So the length of the upper arms will determine where the mounts for them will need to be welded on the lower long arms.

Do you think the crossmember tabs will be strong enough to hold this. I have a old rockkrawler kit with nothing going to the upper control arm mounts. It has got a tourque arm set up . i got some pictures on here somewere. The pictures are under rockkrawler long arm under mj tech. don't know how to move to a different link.

I found your post on that.

if I understand correctly the pictures you showed are of yoru 3 link...and the 3rd link so to speak is the upper arm on the driver side correct?

If so...and you feel you really need the '4th link' which would obviously be ont he passenger side why not just fabricate the passenger side upper frame mount to be the same as the driver side?

After reading your post on that though I don't see why you want the extra upper arm...? I doubt your nose dive will be fixed by it as I have had more than one short arm lifted rig have a dive on one side or the other...and it's usually the passenger side that does it.

That being said look up rusty's or rubicon express's lolng arm kits. They use the method your originally described above and welded brackets to the lower long arms in order for the upper arms to mount to. If you are wanting your uppers to be 'long' arms as well you will be getting into a fair amount of fabrication that still will most likely not change what you are wanting to change.

A little off topic...I notice you are from the Arnold area? I'm originally form St Louis and have relatives in Imeprial, St Louis, and Fenton.

I do not want upper long arms. Just want two short upper arms and brackets welded on lower long arms. I worried about the lower control arm bracket on the crossmember. If it will hold up to 4 link. Yes i live in arnold / perry. Imperial is 4 miles south of arnold.
