wranglercory
I would like to know if anyone has started a thread about converting a cable driven spedo to an electronic spedo with parts from another jeep???
Automan2164
So what are you trying to do here? In most t-cases, you can remover the electronic pickup, and put in the manual one... Depends on the year of the case though. Rob L.
wranglercory
What I am trying to do is replace a 87 that has a cable driven spedo with a electronic spedo, so as to eliminate the cable spedo. The PO has disconnected the cable spedo and the center part that is supposed to go into the TC is gone . So I would have to find a replacement cable. If I can I would prefer to install the electronic one. also this truck has a 207 transfer case in it with the AX-5.
Automan2164
Sure its not a 231? If all you need is the "center part" just go get the whole sender and gear assembly from the yard, and put back in the cable. There is nothing wrong with a cable driven speedo. Rob L. kastein
I dislike getting cable driven speedos connected and disconnected, I lost blood doing a stupid cluster swap last time I tried :dunce: Sure you can. If it's one of the years where the cable pickup is the same dimensions as an electronic pickup from a 91-92 MJ or 91-95 XJ (maybe even later) just pull the electronic pickup, wire it to power and ground as needed, put your speedo gear on it, run a wire to the gauge cluster and swap in a 91-96 MJ/XJ speedo/odo gauge. Might have to adjust some wiring in the cluster to get it to mount up, and if you have cruise control you'll either lose its functionality or have to do some more adaptation. wranglercory
Kastein thank you for your answer. I wish it was a little easier than having people tell me what they think I should do. Kastein you seem to have figured it out from the begining. and Yes it has a 207 TC in it unless I was blinded by the light I was looking at the tag in :wall: :wall: :grrrr:
kastein
I'm an electrical nerd type, so this kind of stuff always interests me. I'm not sure the electronic VSS will fit into the mounting/opening on an np207, that's about the only hang-up I can think of. Also the speedo gear for one may not fit into the VSS. wranglercory
I am actually thinking about finding a NP 231 to replace the 207 1 since the 207 has the vacume attachments for the CAD 2 because I would like to get a TC that I can just use an existing electronic spedo set-up so Ill see what I can do . Thanks again Kastein
Automan2164
Sorry if I couldn't help here, but I just don't see the benefit. I too, am an electrical whiz, as I am the go-to guy for that at work, but just don't see the benefits of trying to convert. Sure, you won't have to deal with a cable for the few times one might have to take the cluster in or out... But, in order to get the speedo to work, it would require a bunch of extra work... Fabbing in a gauge, pinning out the wires, running new wires, finding an alternate route to do cruise, if you want to keep it, working out the printed circuit board... In my mind, the work out weighs the benefits. All that, just so you don't have to mess with the cable, maybe once a year? Seems a little  to me, but if you wish to continue, I have the wiring diagrams for a '92 MJ with the electronic speedo, and can lend advice as you go. wranglercory
thanks automan That is just what I am looking for. I can agree that it is more work but this truck is the one thing I have that I can tinker with and do things like this. The diagrams would be great. I will be swaping the TC out and the front axle to a non CAD since mine will cost more to repair than swap a newer front axle into so since I will be getting rid of the CAD and vacume crud, I decided it would be a good time to do the spedo swap and since I have4 a newer Cherokee Dash above in my garage I will be switching the dash and retrofitting the gauges I want into a custom dash. Yea tons of work ahead but I'm looking forward to it and all the knowledge I can get .
