Not sure if they are the original, It sat in a barn, out of the sunlight for about 11 years. The tires are bias ply and I see no weather checking what-so-ever. My first impulse was to locate a hot knife :D , I think the size is 11L-15. My oldest boy wants them for his toyota  Believe it or not, the CJ cranks right over with the turn of the key and idles perfectly, I can't wait to get the current scout project done so I can put the cherokee on the road for her and dive right into this CJ project. I have a lot of plans for it. Might even drop in a four inch leaf spring lift.
-
Thats probably going to be the plan, I just need to get it up on the hoist and find some identification numbers so I know what to go look for.
-
Here's some shots of the axle in the cherokee: Okay, that last one sucked, here's some of the cherokee itself: And here's a few of the CJ I picked up: The cherokee needs a vaccum booster and front wheel bearing to be road worthy, thats my next project once I get a current scout project I'm working on done.

WHOA..... First off let me say I did not mean to start an arguement in here. Before I go any farther, I should properly introduce myself to this post, as it seems it has attracted some of the highly intelligent jeepers. <-(and that was a compliment). Hello, I'm Binderbart. Or as all my friends call me, Bartman. I'm 43 years of age as of the 24th of May. I'm a divorced father of 3 that has had custody and raised my kids for the past 12 years. I am currently in a long term relationship with a wonderful woman 14 years my senior...yeah I'm a stud. :D , not a wife yet, but someday soon she will be. I just became a grandpa twice in the past year, My daughter gave me a grand daughter and she has a year of high school left, and my oldest son just gave me a grandson->who will spend a lot of time in the shop with us . He is only 4 months old and has probably clocked more time in the shop then some of the newbies in here  . My second oldest boy just left for the army last tuesday, and I'm proud of that. I've been a mechanic for the past 23 years, mostly part-time, full time I'm a cnc machinist/mainly programming and initial set-ups. I work hard and play hard, I put in 12 hours a day between the two jobs. I"ve owned a cj that we totally redid once I got custody of the kids, only to roll and total it 3 years later on one of our clubs trail rides. Since then I have been mainly scouts. The cherokee I have now is my second, the first being a 86 everyday beater that had the 2.8/auto. I picked this one up because the better half said we needed some thing to cart the grand kids around when we had both of them at once. I bought a 88 comanche a couple of months ago as a project rig. You can learn more of this by my other post in here, thats how I found this site. And let me say now, this is one of the coolest sites I've ever come accross, you guys have the same pride us scout guys have. Thats impressive to see. I test drove the manche and it drove great, the day I went to pick it up the fuel pump gave out a couple of miles down the road. so I had it trailered to the shop. 2 hours after a harley friend showed up and offered me his 79 CJ-5 with 73.000 miles on it for $100. so I bought that, a couple of weeks later we picked up the cherokee for her. so now I have the comanche for sale on here, to many projects, to little time. And when I showed it to her, I told her I could swap it back to stock height, she said the lift is what she liked....she's a keeper. Now, I know a ford nine inch when I see one and I've swapped the carriers before, I thought maybe this came out of an exployer or something because the welds looked factory, I'll probably look for another carrier to drop in , and have the locked one to drop in quick if I ever want to "steal" it from her for a weekend trail ride :D . and after reading all the previous post, I'm going to abandon ship on the 258 idea. sounds like alot of headaches I don't need right now. I'm going to use the next post to put up some pictures I took today of the axle, cherokee and CJ I just picked up, thanks for all the great replies. I'd drink a beer with any of you guys, any day!

just another question for the wizards of the jeep, would a 258 bolt right up in place of the 4.0, the reason I ask, is, I know a guy with a wrangler, the square headlight jeep, with a blown engine in it right now, he can't' find a replacement, I have a 258 and if it would be a easy swap in, I would let him have it.

As far as I know, NO 9 inch fits the Cherokee. That doesn't mean that somebody couldn't stuff one under a Cherokee. The track may be different from a stock Cherokee, or they may have used rims with a different offset to keep the tires under the flares. What size tires do you plan to run? I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest that you may be better off swapping in a stock XJ axle. The best choice would be a 97+ Mopar 8-1/4. Easier to find (and cheaper than) a Dana 44, and nearly as strong. I am sorry to see you buying into the myth about lockers being dangerous in winter, though. On ice or in snow, even a Trac-Lok stays locked and I don't hear about thousands of Jeep Cherokees with limited slip axles crashing in January because they are inherently "dangerous." Dang! We get snow in New England, believe it or not, and I couldn't make it through a winter without a traction device of some kind. Open rear in winter? Just shoot me! I'm not sure what locker is in it yet, but if you start out from a stand still with the wheels turn all the way in one direction, and do a full 180 circle, it is solidly locked, the rear wheels churp thru the whole turn. when it shifts from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd (automatic tranny) it tends to lunge a little to the right or left on the shift and you have to be ready for this with the steering wheel. If I was driving it all the time I would leave it as it, I'm just worried she might get on some ice and this quick little quirk to the left or right might throw her into a oncoming lane of traffic.
-
I'll do that in the morning and post up the pictures in here.....are you guys anxious to see the whole rig in all its glory? ;)
-
I will, the length from backing plate to backing plate? I would like to stay with this nine inch, the angle of the driveshaft looks perfect and I hate to change that. It doesnt look like it has been shortened, it looks like a stock nine inch, which nine inch rear ends fit the cherokee? I appreciate all the help.
-
They picked this cherokee up from a wholesaler and our efforts to contact the original owner has hit dead ends. How can I tell which nine inch it is and what it came out of?? I would be up for what your suggesting as it would be a much easier thing to do, but I would like to know exactly what I got for future repairs( brake work, bearings, etc.)

naxja.org but watch what you say, if you ask a dumb question they're dicks and flame the crap out of you. if you just say you flat out don't know what the deal is and ask for someone's opinion, you may get better results. typically, tech for cherokees can be pretty well covered on this site as well. p.s. i'm thinking you need to go cheromanche w/ the cherokee...hummer style with the back half of a comanche cab right behind the rear seats. p.p.s. i have the back half of a comanche cab soon coming off tatersalad (a project of mine) A great idea, but we bought this for one for her. She just started a job about 22 miles away and didn't want to rack the miles up on her truck. A couple of brothers in our offroad club have a jeep lot and found this one for me. It was a sweet deal, It has a 3 inch lift, sway bar quick disconnects, body is in great shape for a wisconsion vehicle, needs some TLC is all. It also has a ford nine inch rear end with some kind of a locker in it, thats what I'm wanting the info on. I'm planning on swapping back to a original rear end. This thing would be a little dangerous for her to drive in the winter with the rear locker. But it will still make a great grocery getter :D

I like this site for the comanche's, Does anyone in here frequent any great cherokee sites like this one? We just picked up a 95 jeep cherokee with a bunch of mods and I would like to find a site to do some searching for some info. Thanks in advance.

front bumper tie in plates
binderbart replied to 87manche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is this something you just drew up or did you make a set of plates from these blueprints?? +/- 1/16 on all fractional dimensions is wide open ;) , some of the stuff we machine at work we have to hold +/- .0005, thats when it gets fun. -
I agree with ya on this, but how many gremlins would I run into with gages, and any other dash components? Also, are any of the jeeps set up to do a fuel injected swap? or anything that doesn't involve the cps? Or is using the cps my only option? Just think of how nice it would be to have a full frame underneath one. and by using the scout drivetrain, I can put the front driveshaft on the passenger side and use the scout axles with lock outs and have 44's. this would also give me a 5 on 5&1/2 bolt pattern and use all the extra rims I have.
-
I'm listening.....how could a guy run the whole scout drivetrain with the 258 and make it work with the comanche cab? There would be a lot of by-passing the computor. Would it be possible to fuel inject the 258 without the cps? this would be a option I would consider.
-
wow, very pricey for me. I'm still rolling ideas around on this one. I may just go to the old 258 carburated and sell the manche at this point. drop a cab of about anything on there that would work. did they carburate the first manches' that came out??? I like the cab and style of the comanche. would like to keep this idea afloat. could use the one I bought as a parts rig. just bouncing ideas around for right now.
-
Could this sensor be put in the scout automatic? and what adapter are you refering too?
-
Okay, a little more update on this idea, My plans are to mount the comanche cab on a full frame, cut away what isn't needed to make this work. I have found a frame set up that was originally equipped with the 258/auto/dana 20. The reason for this is to have the newer fuel injected six bolted up to some stronger hardware-dana 44 front and rear. what I need to know is, will the starter for the 88 camo six be the same as the starter for the old 258?thats the only problem I forsee right now. It would be nice to have the newer body with the fuel injection and the old school drive train. Some what of a body lift could be accomplished on mounting the cab, and I can purchase the suspension lift down the road if needed. I'm planning on doing this on a scout frame, as they came with 258's also. I can swap over the tank with the fuel pump, lots of options there as I'm going with the flatbed. So I'm looking at mounting the scout 258 auto(727 torqueflite) to the newer six cylinder. Using the dana 20 and scout drivetrain with lock outs. This whole set up would be lighter than a scout would be and I have a room full of scout parts.
-
yes, the 4.0 shares the same bellhousing as the 258, and the AMC v8's. really! hmmmmmmmm....... :jump:
-
Oh, I had a question for the wizards. Is the transmission bell housing bolt pattern the same for the 88 inline six as the old 258 inline six that jeep had? Just doing a little pondering.....if it is, I might have an idea for a cool build.

I'll check these sites out, I did look at the bumper brackets, looks like something you could make easy enough. I went to go after it again yesterday with a car dolley. the tires on it have dry rot so I took some spares. The lug nuts are so rusted they won't come off by hand. I got discouraged and just came back home. I'm starting to get a bad taste in my mouth on this one. I read how great these comanches are in here but I have to honestly say I'm starting to have my doubts....don't anyone take this the wrong way, and I'm not saying I'm giving up yet. But I will say one thing. I went after quite a few parts scouts that sat for anywhere from 2 to 8 years and all I had to do was drop in a fresh battery, 10 gallons of fresh gas and within 10 minutes I was driving them home.
-
Something I forgot to ask earlier. I did notice when I first took off in the comanche and drove the mile before it died, that the front end was squirrely. while it was broke down we did a quick check on the front end to discover the frame to be cracked where the steering box mounts. Is this common on them? my plan is to weld in some plating to reinforce it. Once I get it home that is :D
-
(alt+p) Well here it is. But its starting out on the wrong foot. We didn't get a mile away and it died. We pulled it back to the dealership and put it up on the hoist to find the fuel pump quit. So I'm going to go after it with a car dolley next week. My oldest boy gave me the idea for the name. On the way home he made the comment "Dad, you gave the same amount of money for you cj years ago and it was in alot worst shape than this, and you made that nice, if anyone could polish a turd, you could Dad" So hence the name in the title.

School me on (bedless) Comanche's
binderbart replied to binderbart's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Many of our trucks are like that. :D Funny you should say that, the place I'm buying it from is a dealership run by two brothers, they started our offroad club 30 years ago. I called the one the other day to tell him I was coming after this. I'm a bonifide scout guy and they would love the chance to put me in a jeep. The conversation was a classic. Me: hey, bubba<--made up name--, I'm coming up to get that comanche. Bubba: Okay....are you going to trailer it home? Me: Nah, I'll have it insured and I'll drive it Bubba: oh, well you know the brakes ain't the greatest? Me:yeah, but I drove it and they will be good enough to get me home on the back roads Bubba: okay....four wheel drive doesn't shift either Me: thats okay, I'll figure that out and fix it Bubba: oh, and its going to need tires......actually, you know that thing is going to need a whole lot of work right? and it has some rust too Me: thats just what I'm looking for bubba, rust means I can trim the fenders and work means I can do it my way, wait a month or two and you won't recongnize the truck :D Bubba: LOL, yeah, I saw what you did with that old rusted out cj years ago, you must enjoy project vehicles. Me: yup, keeps me out of the bars, I'll probably be up friday if that works for you. Bubba: you bet, and we will have a set of dealer tags on it for ya....what was that price we agreed on....$5000?! Me: no....you were going to pay me to haul it off for ya! what a great bunch of guys to take the time to make sure ya knew all the greif with a rig. I'm going to snap a bunch of photo's before I start, should I bother posting them on here? :D -
School me on (bedless) Comanche's
binderbart replied to binderbart's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Okay, body lift is definitly out of the question  I'll probably stay away from four link due to the fact this will be a multi-use vehicle. Everday driver, trail rig, wood cuttter-hauler, trailer puller(small trailer). If things go as planned, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. If so, I promise to post it. I'm anxious to get it. It may look like a turd to most, but it will be a thing of beauty to me.
