Is this an old suspension lift?
emosun replied to emosun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ah ok this doesn't have a towing package and is an 87 short bed. I think maybe someone got one of these kits at one point in the past. I don't think they'd take the time to install the front springs and all the shocks and just so happened to have an extra leaf already installed. that being said it all kinda needs fixing anyway so mystery somewhat solved for now. lol -

was a 4/1 pack even an option? I thought it could only be 3/1 or 3/2? -

Yeah.. now that I know a bit more about how rear springs are supposed to look.... these spring are VERY worn out. which leads me to believe these are probably it's original springs and shocks lol -

hmm... well i suppose it technically is an old lift kit. supposedly rancho made lift kits that included red springs back in the day (according to Ai). With how rusty the kit is i wouldn't be surprised if it was installed pretty early on at some point in it's life. my dad have a nissan pickup with 300k on it that has all it's original suspension on it still so i think it's possible -

Ok is there maybe a different measurement for a 4 wheel drive and thats maybe the 2 wheel drive? I measured from the tops of the tubes to the frame and it's 9 1/2" up front and 10" in the rear -
The front coil springs used to be red. The shocks were white/red and said Rod Hall on them making me think they were Rancho rod hall edition shocks. How do I tell if the truck was lifted or not? Also sorry for the terrible photos my phone is broken so these come courtesy of a 2013 samsung galaxy. one thing i will say , this is a squishyest most comfy thing i've driven in a while. the shock still work really well for being maybe 30-40 years old.

Re-did my own crappy bodywork on the driver side that I originally did with thin sheet metal and used two more junkyard door skins from a cherokee. Looks slightly better than it previously did and is much more durable. Also rolled on some bed liner. I did consider simply repainting the bed red... but I realized how quickly and easily it will get scratched up by me using it. So I opted to go for the black bed liner look instead.

Installed free house carpet. I had a new roll of this just sitting in the garage and the color isn't half bad all things considered. Good enough for a cheap work truck

thx for the report!. That's interesting so maybe at some point the wheels were changed?

Definitely not a complete rebuild. This is what most car guys would consider to be a parts car. Not a candidate for an expensive rebuild. I actually however get a lot of enjoyment from buying the worst example of something and keeping it going. I like seeing the history and the patches and repairs along the way that add to the story of the car and show it's age. It's far more interesting to me to see how a car survived than to totally erase it's entire past.

Replaced front wheel bearings and brakes and parking brake and welded the frame in july/august. Repaired the bed sides with door skins on one side and a roll of steel on the other. Painted with a can of sherwin williams color match oil paint and a brush. Not great but better than it was. Replaced driver side door. Took about 10lbs of rust out of the rear bumper and repainted it. Repainted wheels. Also replaced a ton of wiring that was all done with house wire nuts

Bought in july 2026 for 1000$ . First jeep I ever owned but probably the 40th car I've ever bought. 1987 4.0 / 5spd manual / 4wd 230k+ Still runs and drives but extremely rusty. The floors had been entirely replaced with bits of metal and self tappers and flex seal by someone at some point. Both bed sides had rust holes the size of basket balls. 60% of the frame on the driver side was rotted and missing between the cab and bed. These are the original photos of it from the sales ad. Test drove it and it actually drove really well. Major issues at the time were frame rot / parking brake / engine mounts.

4.0 / 5spd manual / 4wd Wisconsin 230k+ On road daily still registered, being repaired. Bought in july 2026. I believe I'm the 5th owner based on a history report. Might possibly be from washington originally? Still runs and drives but extremely rusty. The floors had been entirely replaced with bits of metal and self tappers and flex seal by someone at some point. Both bed sides had rust holes the size of basket balls. 60% of the frame on the driver side was rotted and missing between the cab and bed. (Included before image) Wondering where it was originally sold and what the build sheet for it may have been. The rear bumper is a luverne bumper which I think isn't very common to see on a comanche and might be original? It also has Rod Hall Edition Rancho RS5000 shocks that somehow still work and i'm wondering if they are the originals? I also suspect it may have had a topper on the bed for a long time.
