IMG_8145.HEIC Check out what someone did before me! Looks like fun right? Obviously there are some missing connections here... According to the Electrical Manual it looks like violet/yellow should splice and go to both B and D of this connector. It also looks like A should be a wire to the low pressure switch and E (the light blue) should go to heater and blower controls. Anyone have experience with this?

It's been a while. Haven't really done much to it since I last posted. Now that I finally got plates on the thing I've been using it though to cart things around including my tools and a surfboard! Recently decided to chuck the bed liner because it was warped to $#!& anyway and I'd rather just have a sprayed bed liner in the future. Also clearing out the massive amounts of dirt allowed the bed to drain water after it rains now so that's a plus. My next plan of action is removing the mechanical fan and installing a triple banger electrical fan shroud. Probably going to wire it so 2 are always running and the third kicks on after the temp sensor reaches a certain threshold. Any tips on that setup would be appreciated. Further down the line I'm looking to replace my axles with some Dana 44's. I bought it with these 31" tires which sure looks sexy but I have Dana 35's and I just checked the gear ration for the rear and it is probably a 3.07... I imagine that's why it drives so $#!&ty? Feels kinda laggy accelerating in 1st. Maybe I just forgot how to drive manual IMG_8392.HEIC IMG_8380.HEIC IMG_8382.HEIC

I am looking for the temp switch. But that is good to know that's why those ports are empty as well! A YouTube video I saw showed someone working on their Renix 4.0 XJ and their switch seemed to be near where those ports are.

Was attempting to suss out the A/C wiring today and cooling fan relay but I ran into some problems. One being I can't find the radiator temp sensor and the AC Low Pressure Switch. I attached a photo of what I think the low pressure switch is. I have the connector for it (one cable is cut the other runs through the firewall. When I look at the connector index at the back of the electrical manual the connector looks nothing like that and the color code for the cables don't match. Can anyone clarify for a noob like me if that is what I think it is. Also I'm looking for the diodes for the cooling fan and the A/C system and also I can't locate the radiator temperature sensor! If anyone has helpful photos I would much appreciate it! Side note, was it common place to use duct tape instead of electrical tape for splices back in the 80's or am I looking at the "handy" work of someone else?

Hey everyone, Figured I'd start a build thread to document my slow build of my 88 Comanche. So far I have only swapped out the headlamp switch, fixed the hood release cable, fixed a vacuum leak, installed a H4 headlight wiring harness with relay, and fixed the lamp in the digital clock. Whilst doing these things I have noticed a lot of strange wiring habits of one of the PO's. Bad wire splices, wire nuts, knocked cables, cables missing, cables just snipped... amazing. Anyway, I'm going to start documenting here. If there is a better way to post photos here, let me know. Attached is the first one from the day I took it home.

I definitely will. There's many projects in my future. -
Relay Center Housekeeping

Awesome! Thanks Ohm! I thought the schematic didn't make sense. I figured the Yellow ignition cable would make the most sense to go to 85 or 86. Now to rebuild the A/C Clutch relay circuit... -
Hey guys, quick question about relay wiring. I was cleaning up the connectors and labeling which relay is which and I notice that my O2 relay has the wrong color cables going to wrong ports. Attached is the photo of the back of my relay socket and also attached is a screenshot of the 1988 wiring diagram. It seems that on my socket I have Yellow and Grey/Yellow on 85 and 86 and the Orange from the Fuel Pump Relay is on 30 when it should be on 86. Anyone notice anything weird like this? Any quick tips on testing? Also another interesting thing is my A/C Clutch Relay is nowhere to be found. The cable is cut at the A/C Clutch and there are no more cables leading into the relay center. Is that relay usually located in the relay center? IMG_3152.HEIC

Strange Electrical Issues

IMG_9088.HEICA brief update. I went ahead and swapped out the headlamp switch for a new one. My old one was looking rather toasty (attached). I also went and installed the H4 anti flicker harness so now my LED headlights work like a charm and I don't have to worry about all the amperage running through my headlamp switch. I've been finding all sorts of electrical landmines since I've started. Botched wiring, someone using 2 18 gauge wire instead of one 14 gauge to power the cooling fan, and someone hot-wired the blower motor so it was running sans fuse... very dangerous. Also the rest of the wiring for the A/C system is hacked up. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of crimping and soldering in my future. IMG_9088.HEIC -

Thanks for the tips! I'm betting that you're right about that radio being wired wrong. Also the digital clock does not work so maybe that is another clue as to the wrong wiring. Ohm thank you for that! Finally some wiring diagrams I can read!! I've went and updated my signature and posted in the registry, glad to be here. I'll update once I do a little more investigating. -
1988 JEEP COMANCHE 4.0L I6 Trans BA10/5 Build date: Not sure. The sticker on the inside of the driver door is in poor shape. Current Location: A small shore town near Asbury Park, NJ Status: Currently runs, engine bay is a mess, body has severe rust damage but frame is not bad. Parked in the street awaiting the DMV to open up post pandemic. Notes: It is a red Comanche with gray interior. The seats are bucket seats from 2001 Honda CRV. The day I brought it home I had to drive with a zip tie holding the hood down. The hood release cable was broken and the mechanism to close the hood was rusted so bad (definitely why the cable was broken) that the hood would not close. There is random body damage on it but nothing extreme, just some minor dents. The worst damage is probably on the hood which the PO told me as I drove away with it that it fully opened on them once on the highway And now a picture of it on the day I brought it home

Hello everyone, First time posting here, have spent a decent amount of time skimming through some amazing stuff here. I bought my 88 Comanche 4.0L about a month or 2 back and it ran great. Everything seemed amazing but then I started noticing little things here and there. I've recently noticed some electrical stuff acting strange and I figured I should just get on here and ask. Just a little bit of detail, this Comanche does have aftermarket led headlights and an aftermarket radio. Anyway: 1. The radio will not shut off when car is turned off while headlights are off. The only way to get the radio turn off is if I turn on the headlights and shut them off again. 2. Intermittent headlight blinking. This is probably just a shotty connection, will research this one soon. My ignition switch also seems a little messed up, unless it is a common feature to be able to start your Comanche without a key haha. I tried finding some good resources for wiring diagrams so I could go over all the electric with a fine tooth comb but must links I found were expired. I did stumble upon Cruiser54's page and will definitely start by cleaning up the grounding scheme.
