Internal to External slave AX5
WeezyBlue replied to WeezyBlue's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Oh gotcha. Just to verify, a 94-02 AX5 bell housing should work fine between my 87 2.5 and my 86 AX5? Then I'll go to the dealer for the hydraulic assembly -

Waiting on a photo of what? I already took your advice and canceled my order and I'm going that route, as I said above. Just need a bell housing now. Lots on ebay. -

Yeah I saw some high prices new online but a lot on ebay as well. Either way I'm sure the aftermarket support is better than for the 86. I'm not even sure the hydraulic line I ordered was going to be the full length, I figured I was going to end up fabricating lines. -

That's nice if they're still available. Of course then I just need to find a bell. I ordered some parts yesterday to try to make what I have work but if not, I'll send them back and go this route I suppose. I've already got a new 87 master in the jeep and the clutch fork from an 86, so I ordered an 86 slave and hydraulic line and a bearing. EDIT I don't think it's worth my time @#$%ing around with matching stuff together if this is a surefire way to get it to work. I canceled my parts order and I'll go find a bell housing. Thanks! -

What's the advantage of that over the external bell I already have? -

Can I just cap off all the vac lines from the transfercase? I just shifted the fork over on the axle CAD and plugged those ports. -
Swapping an out an internal slave 87 with an external slave 86 transmission. Can I use the 87 master cylinder with the 86 transmission, or do I need to adapt an 86 to fit the 87? I could also just swap the bellhousings and keep it internal, but it's an annoying setup. EDIT interesting that both the (supposedly) 86 and 87 bell housings look identical. Including a pivot for a clutch fork and same bolt pattern for an external slave. Is this normal? 86 seems like a really odd year, given my donor also came with 3.07s

I'm actually repainting/reupholstering the interior black and tartan but I'd buy the covers in any color!

I got this Jeep, PO installed a 3" lift. I'm fixing rust and rattle canning the whole truck, welding in new floors, etc. I just ordered some Napier flares. Wondering what the consensus would be on 33s at this lift height with the cut out fenders. Obviously I won't be cutting it any more than required for the flares, but if I need to add an inch or two to the lift that's fine too. I'm doing a 4wd conversion on it so I need a new rear driveshaft and the axles are mismatched so a regear is happening regardless. All very open to options at the moment. Part of me wants to go all the way and put the TJ d44s and 37s under it but I'm trying to restrain myself lol

Thanks for the info everybody. I'm happy to cut out the hole and mount the front ones. Thanks!

Working on piecing together a full interior, what normally goes here on both sides (behind the seatbelt in the pic) and what does it look like? I'm assuming a speaker grill similar to the door cards. Anybody know where to get them or have a pair? While on the topic, does anybody know if the seat belts are the same between the MJ and XJ?

Willing to drive a ways, pay fair price. Roll bar and/or brush guard. Really want a factory brush guard for an MJ or XJ,, but any roll bar that fits decently is great. Twin Cities

Misfire at idle - Renix 2.5 TBI

Hoping. It doesn't burn oil or anything, no smoke, coolant looks good. Who knows what happened before I took ownership though. -
Misfire at idle - Renix 2.5 TBI
WeezyBlue replied to WeezyBlue's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was considering that a possibility. Maybe seafoam, an oil treatment and crossed fingers should be on the list. Motor has something like 168k miles -
1987 Comanche has what definitely sounds like a misfire, only at idle. Often when cold it starts up and idles smooth, then soon thereafter, maybe when it comes out of open loop and the revs drop to where they should be, it starts missing once every couple seconds sometimes, sometimes more frequently. It still idles strong, and under any amount of throttle it goes away entirely. Or at least, it seems like it goes away entirely. It drives totally smooth, under power or even at slow cruise. Makes me think it's something that's just barely acting up and the lower revs just make it obvious. I've done plugs, wires, cap and rotor. All my Jeeps in the past have been 4.0 HOs so I'm not really sure what to check next. I've done some searches and read a lot of threads here and other places but most people seem to have a rough idle that causes stalling, or a misfire under load, etc. Any general ideas?

This finally showed up. For the TJ unfortunately. I do have an old Toyota turbo laying around that would be fun on the MJ though... -

I was looking at your listing earlier today, facebook marketplace I think. Tempting. I have a bit of a space issue at the moment. I'm off thursdays and fridays, I might get ahold of you. -

Got the front tore down a bit. Damage is evident in the front right. Just need to figure out how to straighten it out enough so the new fenders line up decently. eBay stereo showed up. Not in as great of shape as I was hoping but wired it up on the bench and she plays cassettes and sounds great. If anybody could tell me what the hell is going on here I'd appreciate it. I'm very tempted just to run entirely new wiring. Scored some missing parts from 88mjsally on the forum. Super fast shipper A+++++ I think they say on eBay. Seems everything I find is grey. I was planning to dye the grey parts black and keeping the black and honey interior theme that has been growing on me but part of me wants to dye everything black and do a sort of silly tartan lined interior ala Matt Farah. Yet to decide. Some overpriced window seals showed up More seals and some 3 point handles. Still need to figure out if I even have the provision in the doors for the upper mounting point but I can figure something out. Little off topic here but the girlfriend traded in her BRZ for a super rare 5 speed Forester XT. This thing is a sick sleeper. Can't wait to do some exhaust work, coilovers, sti ecu, etc. -

First of all, settled on a name for this project. My first ever Jeep was named Darwin for Charles Darwin, theory being he was always evolving. Current TJ is named Wallace after Alfred Russel Wallace. This Jeep is continuing the historical figure theme with Lincoln. It looks like a Lincoln to me. Got that 3.54 geared D30 under the Jeep. Forgot how hard it is to get coils in and out of these d30s without disconnecting control arms or cutting some steel off the axles. I've been tossing around the idea of grabbing an 8.25 and a non CAD HP d30 and gearing 4.88 so I can run some 33s or 35s but I think I've decided I'm just going to buy a set of 4.10s and give regearing a shot for the first time. Figure if I don't mess it up and it holds up I can offload a matching set of 4.10s pretty easily and regear some junkyard axles. Took it for it's first, although little, hardware run Snagged a visor for what I think was a very fair price Got that brand new Mopar bumper installed, complete with the plug and play wiring harness for the plate lights. Stopped for a couple days to install a lift on a coworker's Jeep. 3.5" Metalcloak game changer. Pretty nice lift. The previous owner of the MJ stopped by with his new project to grab a beer and see what we were up -

Score! Somebody saw my truck in town and left a note yesterday. Today I got to open a brand new Mopar bumper from 1993 for $50 -
I'm sure the 3.54s will be fine for what I'm doing, just cruising around town once in a while. Just disappointing cause I thought I was snagging some 4.10s. I've done a lot of different tire/gear combos in different Jeeps. My current TJ is 5.13s with 37s and a 6 speed. Gears for days. I had a TJ with 3.73 on 33s with a 2.4 at one point as well. I'll wait for a cheap xj with 4.10s to pop up or I'll get impatient and regear the Manche

This vin decoder also indicates the 5 speed as the factory transmission, which is why I initially assumed that to be the case. http://www.comanchemj.1hwy.com/custom3.html donor vin is 1JTHL6578GT160119 If both pieces of info are correct, then nothing has been swapped. ax5 with 3.54s.
-
It shifts into what would be a fifth gear sitting on the floor... How do you identify it by the case? Stamping somewhere? I haven't even seen the vin registry, I'll have to check. What makes the most sense is that the transmission was swapped at some point then. I have pulled the covers, they're indeed 3.54. I found this info on another forum, supposedly out of an AMC service manual. 8th digit in vin 7=x model 3.31 or 3.548=xl model 3.31 or 3.549=xls model 3.31 or 3.54F=Custom(metric Ton-pkge) 4.11G=x (metric Ton-pkge) 4.11H=XL (metric Ton-pkge) 4.11J= XLS (metric Ton-pkge0 4.11 Obviously doesn't mention transmission option
-
Also I'm not sure how swapping an ax4 to ax5 would change the gear ratios
-
I would have checked if it was a more important build. This is a fun side rig project. For $150 for the donor Jeep I didn't really care what it had. Just sharing info
