Where is the best place to get parts for the aw4 trans? My local parts stores can get the solenoids but that is about it. trying find parts to rebuild the valve body.

I know it been nearly a year since I posted last. I got busy with work and decided to deal with it for the time being, but now I have new issues. now when I go from park to reverse it doesn't shift from park into reverse and then when I move to the neutral position the trans goes into 1st gear. I can take down to the 1-2 position it started out normal and I can drive it like always by shifting up to D and it shifts all through the gears including overdrive. just no reverse or neutral. I unplugged the TCU then tried it with no changed. The 10 amp fuse there at the TCU is also good. I did get me a new ohm meter. probed E,F, and G with B being ground. I am using an analog meter not digital and when I probe the three prongs on the transmission side the dial zeros out all the way to the right. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? -

I haven't been able to get on here for a few days. I wouldn't replace the solenoids without testing them first. I was going to test them the other day, grabbed my ohm meter and the battery was dead. So I took it apart to replace the battery and the whole insides were burnt up. So I will have to buy a new meter. ScottJeep, I know of naxja.org but am not a member. I also own a '88 Comanche and being the MJ and XJ are so similar I didn't think it would hurt to post questions on here about my cherokee as well. Cruiser54, Those tips will come in handy, Thanks! One more dumb question. Where is the NSS Located? I haven't had much experience with the transmission side of things. -

Do you know of any good write ups on replacing the solenoids. I don't have a FSM. All I have is a cheap Chilton manual that doesn't help much with anything. -

That didn't help. I still have to shift it to first gear at take off and then shift up to D and then it shifts fine though the rest of the gears until I stop again. It like it wants to take off in 2nd gear or something. Thanks again. -

I have an '89 Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 4wd with automatic. I am having shifting issues. when I put in D it wants to start out in like 2nd gear. I have to manually shift it to 1st. once I get going I can shift it back up to D and it shifts fine through the rest of the gears. any suggestions? I have done some searching of the forums but I haven't been able to find anything similar to my issue. Thanks!

No, Mine has a small cable about a foot long from the back of the speedo to a little round deal with an electric wire on the side of it with a longer cable connected to it going to the trans. After messing with it a while I was able to get the cluster out. both cable don't seem to be broken in any way. I tested the speedo with a drill and it works. reckon the thing in the transfer case that the cable connects to could be bad? Also, any ideas on how to get the rubber (through the firewall) grommet off the old cable? -

Thanks Fernando87mj, No, it doesn't have cruise control, but for some reason has that type of speedo cable. my speedo quit working so I assumed it was the cable. at the time I bought my cable at O'reillys I didn't know I had this style of cable and they didn't ask me anything about it and it looks like the lower cable. Do you know where I can find the upper cable? I've been on the phone trying to locate one but no luck thus far. Thanks! -
Does anybody out there have a video or pictorial of changing a speedometer cable on a 1989 mj/xj? I am having problems changing it out on my 89 cherokee Laredo. I have never had to do this with either of my jeeps before and I know it should be fairly simple, I'm having problems with getting the cluster out. There is what appears to be a short cable about a foot long coming out ot the cliuster with black coupler with an electrical connecter on the side of it with another cable connected on the opposite side of the short cable. is this the speedo cable. I have got the cable disconnected from the transfer case and the push on clip holding about middle ways of the cable off and all the screws out holding cluster in place and I still can't get the cliuster to slide out. Any help would be greatly apprecieated! Thanks!

Awesome! I'll be going after it on Monday. The Guy at the JY said the Header panel still has the grill, lights, and Bezels. so I think that will work out perfect. I can't wait to get my truck back on the road. :cheers:

Ok. Thanks! I have been doing some looking on the internet and there doesn't appear to be much difference in the looks of the '96 grill setup compared to the '88 grill. Am I wrong?

I'm needing a header panel and grill for my '88 MJ. I've found a the parts I am needing at a local JY but they are off of a '96 XJ. Will those parts fit my '88 or will there be mods that have to be done? I would rather be stock as possible. Thanks. J.W.

Thanks for the tips info guys. But sadly I have to change things a little. I Hit a deer with comanche and killed the radiator and whole front cap on the drivers side, fender, header, grill frame, whole headlight assembly, and bumper are done for. So now I have to put to the side and hope I can the parts I need to fix it. I had just got it back on the road about a month ago after a long wait and now this. :cry: -

It seems to be something besides the brakes. I can be driving down the road push in the clutch and it sometimes will die until I change gears and let out on the clutch again. but most of the time its only when I come to a stop. but is always starts back up and I can go on down the road. I have poured some Seafoam down the TB while running and then let it set a while before cranking it up. It rans better and smoother, but hasn't got rid of the dieing thing. :mad: -

At the Brake booster? Sorry for my lack of intelligence on this, I'm more knowledgeable on Volkswagens than jeeps at this point. But I'm trying to learn. -

Where is the Idle Air Motor located? is it the same as the IAC? -
On start up it idles fine If drive down the road a little bit and then push in the clutch to come to a stop it dies like turning of the switch, but it always starts right back up and drive fine until I need to stop again. Funny thing is it doesn't do it all the time every onvce in awhile it will come down to an idle and stay running. what would cause this? I've done quite a bit of searching but have come up with nothing. :wall:
