help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yea prices are pretty high for jeep stuff around the NW. haven't seen an ax15 for less than 800. people want 3-400 for ford 8.8s too. anyway do you guys think a cheaper 120v flux core welder would work fine for relocating the spring mounts? just looking into options as I do not want to pay a shop to do all the axle work. plus I could use the same welder to fix up the hack job on the bed. -

those transmission go for nearly 1000 bucks in these parts... I was told it had a ax15 when I traded for it. rig was originally an automatic so I wasnt sure what they swapped it out for. -

help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
thanks. no I understand I am a jeep newbie so I really appreciate all the help from everyone. I posted the welded axle up for trade and a couple people are interested in trading me an open 8.25. Although I am tempted to go the 8.8 4.10 route since this thing has 33s on it. Would have to find a 4.10 dana 30 though. -

help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
teeth look good its just filled with grey sludge. also found a part number on the rear springs, came back as a comanche specific rusty's 4" leaf pack. but it looks like 2 of the leafs are missing from them. so I reckon whover slapped this SOA setup together pulled some of the leaves out to even the lift. ugh. -

help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yea I was going to say. but as far as options of not modifying an axle am I already past that point? There is someone local selling a complete 3.54 d35 out of a comanche for 100 bucks. Could I swap that on and still retain the SOA setup? -

car used to be auto. pretty sure it is 3.54 up front after talking with previous owners. -
chopped up wiring harness...
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yea its a bummer for sure. So can I just find a harness out of a 87-90 cherokee? or should I look for a comanche one? -
Should I even bother here? Just got this rig the other day posted about the axles. Lots of chopped wires, hard to make sense of it all. Runs fine but heater and gauges don't work, someone tried to wire in some different ones. Also all the vacuum lines seem to run no where. So can I swap the entire dash and engine harness from any other renix comanche or cherokee with the same 4.0? Thanks

help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yea that sounds about right. I think it deserves to be fixed up. sorting the brakes out and "unwelding" the rear are first priority for me. yea no shocks in the rear. mounts are still there. -

although even at this point I am a little apprehensive digging into this thing more. it might just be destined to be only a wheeler. might not be worth it for me to start fixing all this stuff just to make it streetable. I digress. -

yea I am realizing the sway bars are very important. like i said I havent driven it farther than a few hundred feet. thanks for the input, guess its time to learn how to weld finally! I have no idea what they were trying to do haha. it looks like $#!& honestly. also yea I am posting that canopy to get rid of it -
help with identifying axles
motiusclyde replied to motiusclyde's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
awesome thanks, I am leaning that way. as far as plans I posted a bit more about the truck in the build section, but I traded a car I basically had nothing into for this thing last night. my plan is to tone it down from its current hacked "wheeler" state and actually be able to drive it around town and take it camping, overlanding. Would like it to have some road manners. I have only driven it around the block and its pretty scary. It will not be a hardcore wheeler but I would like to hit some trails since I have never really done that before. Like I said I am a subaru guy, most of which have been low and fast  here are some more pictures of the hack job. -

thanks yea I just noticed that too, I have no plans on driving it in its current state with the brakes not working at all. I have also been considering moving to a smaller lift. I just identified the front springs as rustys ror 405 which look to be 4.5 xj springs. maybe even go back to SUA in the rear. thanks for the help. -

ok so from what I can tell the load sensing valve is still plumbed in, whoever did the swap used the comanche leaf plates on the top of the ubolts. so maybe a good way to go for now is find some shorter shocks that fit, re attached the valve, and open up the diff and try and find the guts from a non welded 8.25. I suppose I have no idea if the axles ratios even match from to back. sorry, this is my first jeep and I have no idea what I am dealing with. I am a subaru guys and traded one of my rigs for this thing to learn about jeeps more! thanks for all the replies! -

that is what I figured. this truck is pretty hacked together. so its save to assume I need to find another 8.25 that is also 3.54 except not welded?
