It's probably a tin can in china now. It ran with no fluid in it to get me home and then wasn't happy afterwords. The bearings got hot, gears didn't look all that great either. Before all this happened it had a rough life. I tried to use the front half on another beat up newer 242 with no such luck. I'm sure a few small parts were salvageable but not many. The back half of the case I welded back together to keep limping it along for a few more years. -

Few months have passed and I have this thing 95% wrapped up. Took it for a drive this evening and am pleased that everything is working again. Replaced the transmission with a 96 23 spline Went from a 21 spline 242 to a 23 spline 231 transfer case Straightened out the rear end, Welded the tubes back to the differential housing Had my drive shaft shortened, Ended up being 1 3/4" too long. Only need to replace the interior transferase shifter gate and bezel. Oh, I also have a trailer now so thats a huge plus! Been a long over due. -
Figured out the idle issue, Who ever did the swap decided it was a great idea to plug off every single vacuum port on the intake manifold. I will fix all that in the coming weeks and plug everything that needs vacuum lines in. Just stoked it runs and the transmission shifts smooth on jack stands. Here are the wire colors from the factory 1996 XJ sending unit. I know Orange is the fuel pump power and the black is the bump ground. Just have to figure out what wires are the reference for the fuel level gauge. Just glad to be down to the "small" things. Mainly Maintenance that hasn't been done to it in ages. Brakes, Tires, Fluids and so forth.

Was able to get the Comanche running this afternoon. I temporary hooked up the fuel system and wiring just to at least hear it run for a minute. I have to figure out the fuel gauge still but I will post about that later on. It runs great as long as the fuel rail isn't fully seated in the intake manifold. This is odd issue to have that I have yet to encounter in many years of working on vehicles. Maybe its something internally in the intake or even the exhaust preventing it from running with the fuel rail fully seated. Possibilities are endless with this one, No idea how long it was sitting and what was living inside and under the hood of this thing. IMG_1217.MOV

Now that I'm home from traveling for work, I will see what I can put together in some free time I hope to have. But while I was gone, Fuel tank showed up (86-87 MJ) and fuel sending unit from a 96XJ. Need to get fuel line ran and sort that mess out. Deteriorated from sitting in the side yard of a house for who knows how long i.

Being a do-er I didn't take any more photo's then what I posted on here. I just get into the thick of things and keep plugging away Welp, change of direction. I installed the pump and put 3 gallons of fuel in the tank. Those 3 gallons of fuel didn't stay in it long. Previous owner must have tried to patch the tank and I didn't catch it. Switching to the other Comanche to get that back on the road. I will get back to this in a month or so. Need to source parts and order them.

The Carter P90011 fuel pump arrived Saturday so I figured I would try and get it installed this weekend. I did manage to get the old pump out and start to clean it up. As I was cleaning it up I got pulled away with other things. Will get back to it this week at some point. If only you could smell this picture.. Tailgate of the MJ and fresh air for this job. The Carter pump is identical to the one that was in the tank. I lost the thread but to whom ever posted the part number. Hopefully next time I update this I will have the Comanche running and I can move on to other things on the long list..

Finally had a few hours to splice the XJ to MJ harnesses together. Nothing is pretty right now with the main goal to make sure I could get this thing to run. Happy to report, It does run!! I can get it to idle on break cleaner. The fuel pump has power/ground but just clicks. Who knows how long it's been sitting and if its even the correct pump. If it's anything like the blower motor, It is seized and seen better days Wiring, I need to clean this up but its all there (least the bits used in the MJ) Here is what the fuel system looks like, Has a FPR on it and has a fuel return from there. I have a Carter P90011 fuel pump on order, Tracking is showing it will be here this Saturday. Will see what happens and how far I get. Besides the fuel issue, What has everyone done for the brake lights? I have turn signals (center bulbs) and was thinking of running a separate circuit to use the top bulbs as brake lights. Seems like a logical and simple solution. Any ideas I would be love to read/hear about them

Appreciate it! Now I have the MJ side of the harness figured out. Now to do the same for the 96 XJ Body harness. Hopefully I can make this work integrating them both together. After some searching I found this old thread with wire colors and so forth. Going to see if the pin outs for the H.O. XJ harness is the same as the 96 OBD2 harness. If so, That would great but going to double check

Spent a bit making a little progress. Removing and labeling wires is the name of todays game. Cleaned out all the hacked wires and connectors since I have that non hacked body harness from a 96 and I also ended up with a complete engine harness/computer from a 96 running XJ. Couldn't pass it up for spare parts just in case I need something during this project. Does anyone know the PIN numbers/wire colors for this connector? I believe its C-118 and in the FMS it doesn't give any pin outs. Pretty sure its all for the interior lights, rear speakers and so forth. Only had a short time but feels good to take some baby steps forward

As they say, S!@& happens! Once I get the other MJ running and a few house projects finished I will get back to it. Joys of owning a fleet of vehicles, When one is broken I can fix it on my time with out rushing -

It's been a little while, Have been spending time on the other Comanche and not so much on this one. Ended up hurting the rear axle this weekend while going to pick up a new transmission. Slipped horribly and banged into gear, That resulted in the axle spinning or the tubes spinning. I got it home and haven't looked much into it. Thats for another day I did manage to get the doner transmission and T case from a 96 XJ -
Change of plans, The local LKQ had a 96 XJ that was placed on Wednesday. I took a chance and went to see what was left (vehicles here in FL get stripped really quick) and it had the complete body harness unmolested. Was able to get photos and also remove the harness with no issues. I even scored the lower dash in decent shape! Thats about it for this this for this weekend, Have to get back to adulting and take care of other things. But this harness will make things a bit easier from here on out

Thats already inside the truck. It's more the body harness and the ECU not getting power is the issue. Just trying to search the internet for the connectors and pin outs with out much luck. Will keeping plugging away, Would be nice to find a 96 XJ and get the body harness from it

Pulled back more of the interior this morning and have narrowed down a lot of the interior wiring issues. The Comanche still has the MJ body harness from the A pillar foot well heading to the back of the truck. So what I'm going to try and do is use the MJ rear wiring and the XJ front wiring. Just looks like I will be asking for assistance on the plugs that follow. I'm going to use the 88 factory service manual for the MJ side, Just don't know what plugs I have to use for the XJ/OBD2 side. Current mess of wires in the daylight for reference Here are the factory MJ plugs (previous owner/"mechanics" wiring and not mine) Pretty sure this is where the XJ/OBD2 harness starts and is what I need to adapt the MJ harness to So in conclusion, Just trying to get the fuel pump, rear tail lamps (stop/turn/brake) to operate and the fuel gauge ext. I want to say these connectors are C118/C119 and C157 as per the FSM.

That would Alsop be helpful, The other diagrams though will get me started and hopefully I won't need the ECM pin outs. Looks like the majority of the rats nest is the fuse block area and the harness heading to the rear of the truck

From what I have been reading a 97+ won't work with this interior and so forth. So this is good news. Just have to find out where the last person left off and continue on. Should be "easier" to track down 96 wiring diagrams. I hated owning a 97 XJ, was such a horrid year for everything.

Spent a little bit of time today uncovering the rats nest of wiring behind the dash. This is going to be a chore to sort out in the coming weeks/months. Does anyone have a good source for wiring diagrams? This is for sure a OBD2 engine and harness in the MJ, Just not sold on it being a 97+ yet. Some reason it keeps flipping the picture every time I try and add it to the post. This is under the dash on the drivers side. The old body harness has been spliced into. It has the fuse block on the drivers side vs the passenger side. So maybe the harness is from a 96? I know my old 97 XJ fuses were all on the passenger side of the vehicle. Will continue to dig into this as time goes. Passenger side, Thankfully they swapped in the auto trans harnesses when they converted it from a manual.

I will have to check this out. Won't lie, I have yet to pop the hood again since I cleaned it and parked it. So this will be a very slow moving saga of getting this thing runny. Thanks for the reference
