  1. Hi I'm Keith. I work for High Octane Performance in Denver Co. We deal in jeeps and old muscle cars. We recently acquired a very CLEAN 1988 MJ. It will be our shop truck, until we get a good offer on it. The pervious owner had started a 4.0 swap but it is not running now. The 4.0 is also an 88. It is bolted up to what I am guessing is an ax15 and it is in the truck with nice new motor and trans mounts. It does turn over...by hand. It has 39 psi fuel pressure at the rail but the fuel pump has to be turned on via a toggle switch under the dash. I would like to get that wired through the ignition switch, but for now I think it will run like this so this is not my first priority. There was two computers laying on the floor of the cab when we picked it up. I can only assume that the one plugged in is for the 4.0 and that the extra was for the old 2.5. I am in the process of indexing the distributor so I can check for spark. I will need to remove what's left of the old harness and figure out where we are at with this thing. It is always tough picking up where someone else left off. Once it is running we plan to hang a Dana 30 up front. After that we will lift it enough to fit 35s. I am new to this site and to the MJ but I have a bit of experience with the 4.0. I recently built a 4.6 stroker for my 2000 WJ. I turned all the wrenches my self for that build and it runs like a stabbed rat so I think I can handle this little truck. I just thought it would be nice to hear what you all thought. I'll post some pictures when I get back to work on Wednesday.
  2. Yeah. I was relying on what the old owner told me. I guess it must have been the 2.5. It came with a new harness that is at least half way installed. I guess I have some more reading to do. Ill look around a bit and then try to ask some intelligent questions. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
  3. Hello there. My name is Keith. I work for High Octane 4x4 and muscle in Denver CO. We buy, sell, traid, restore, and modify Jeeps and late modle muscle cars. We recently aquired a very CLEAN 1988 MJ. The previous owener started an engine swap to get rid of the 2.8 and bolt in a 4.0. The new 4.0 is also an 88. It has MPI. The engine is already bolted up to the trans under the hood but it does not run. I know very little about what it willl take to complete this build. I have built a couple of these 4.0s; most recently I stroked my WJ's tired old 4.0 to a 4.6. I am capable of turning the wrenches, I just don't even know where to start. Here is what I know. We do have 39 psi on the fuel rail, after I flip the toggle switch under the dash to engage the fuel pump....Thats the way it came. It does turn over. And the previous owner said that he had it running at one time. Where should I start? I know it will need fue,l spark and compression to fire. So, I think my next step shoulld be to check for spark. How do I index the distributor so that I can do that. The engine is already at #1 TDC compression.
