Installing an 87 tank that has a pump for 4.0 into my 86 that has a 2.5. Will the 4.0 pump work with the 2.5? If not what is needed to make it work?

I have a 1986 with the 2.5 TBi pump in the tank. Got bad wiring on top of hanger assy. Leaking gas can't seal. Looks like no replacement available for that year. 1987 4.0 is avaialble but I doubt that it will work. Can I get some past success stories. Thanks
