  1. Thanks for your response. I have a 242 lined up on ebay. Problem is it is a 21 spline. However I have found a new old stock input gear for a 242 that is a 23 spline. If I open up the 242 and swap out the input gear with a new one that is 23 spline. Then in theory this should mate up with my 23 spline automatic transmission. The exisit 228 would be removed altogether and replaced with a 242. your thoughts?
  2. Does anyone know if a 21 spline NP 242 can be converted to 23 spline. Is all that is involved simply a matter of changing out the input gear from 21 spline to 23 spline. Also does anyone know if going from a 228 to a 242 is feasible since both are select trac. Any comments and input is appreciated. :help:
  3. Thanks for the info and reply, I found the quandry after I pulled the trigger for a Dana 300. crap. Nothing is ever easy when you start switching $#!& around. :fs1: I am going to research a work around. A cheap work around if I can manage it. I seen a flip kit going for to much money. five hunnert is to much. Then there is the Novak flip ring. I will look into that...my luck that will be just as much. If anyone knows a tried and true way to flip a dana 300 feel free to pipe in. Thanks.
  4. Hello fellow MJ-ers, I finally got my MJ back on the road after a month of trying to find a torque converter. :headpop: I have a TF 904 3 speed automatic with a stock NP229 that is shot to hell Does anyone know if a Dana 300 bolt up ok with a TF904 automatic? The Dana is 23 spline and the stock 229 is 23 spline. But I was wondering if there are any issues with getting a Dana 300 TC to fit my truck.
  5. I bought a 1995 YJ TF904 to replace my 1986 2.8 MJ TF 904. Now my mechanic tells me the torque converters are different. Not only that but the YJ transmission is a lock up and my MJ is a non lock up. So I am assuming there is a electric module to signal the trans to lock up. Is there a work around anyone knows of? Will a manual shift kit work? Is there such a thing? Any help will be greatly appreciated
  6. I hope not. I do not want to fool with master cylinders, pedal assemblys and shifters. to adapt. Someone in a forum mentioned running a hot link from the battery to a switch on down to the converter plug .
  7. Me: 1986 MJ 2.8 V6 2barrel carb with 228 selectrac. 3 speed auto TF904 Donor vehicle: 1995 YJ wrangler Inline 4 cylinder 3 speed automatic case stamped 361 . Transfer case is 207 command trac My research for this vehicle shows that the 1995 YJ 4 banger did come with a TF904 but my concern is the donor has a plug in for what I think is a electronic torque converter. My concern is whether or not I can work around this as my torque converter was non lockup. Any one see where this donor transmission may cause me grief. Any input would be greatly appeciated.
  8. Anyone know if a 4 cylinder 95 YJ wranglers TF904 will work for my 86 mj? seems to me to be the same tranny.
  9. I appeciate all the info folks. It seems that once I am up and running again the only thing left to fail will be the transfer case. And if I know my Jeep that is just what is in store for me.
  10. Hi Mvusse, thanks for the quick reply. I am certain my XLS MJ 86 2.8 T-case is Selec track. It has the ol crappy vaccum actuated 4x4 system. Unfortunately the donor vehicle T-case is a Command Trac 207. And worse yet I would have to purchase the T-case separate from the guy as he is not throwing it in with the TF904 which he states has 104k miles on it. If I can get him down on the price of the tranny to around 200 bucks I may consider this transmission if I can bolt it to my 229 t case. I am thinking the shaft lengths will be the differing componants. Your thoughts?
  11. I have found a new Transmission from a 1986 MJ 2.8 with TF904 mated to a command trac 207 T case. My Truck is a 1986 MJ 2.8 with a TF 904 mated to a NP229 selec trac T case. So the only difference is the donor vehicles T-case is a NP207 and my truck has a NP229 can I use the transmission from this donor vehicle even if the T-cases are different? Your thoughts?
  12. Once again thanks to all. I think I am going to go with a remanufactured 904TF. Not that I love this tranny but since it is the original one and lasted 200k miles I can not complain. This will make life easier (I hope). I will send the remanufacture company all the numbers off my unit and spline count on my Tcase etc to hopefully get the right one sent to me. I have way to much into this truck to let it go. I will hopefully post a positive update when I am back on the road. Right now I am on a motorcycle and get no coffee on the ride to work in the morning. :shake: Anyone ever hear of these folks http://www.colemantaylor.com/
  13. Thanks to all of you for the replys: Geonovast, If I do go with an AX5 do I suppose I would need to get the clutch pedal assymbly off the donor jeep. Is the clutch cable going to come through the floor? As far as finding a trustworthy trans shop, I really think that is going to be the hard part. I would really like a standard if possible provide I can find a flywheel that mates the 2.8 with the AX5. I am assuming the flex plate is what we are talking about as it is externally balanced in the 904TF and I guess internally balanced in the AX5. Or is this another can of worms. I am located in Cental Texas, Salado 76542. I will know more about what I am dealing with when I pull the old trans out and get a look at the shaft length. The torque converter on the 904 for this 86 is a German Sachs and rare and expensive and I think kaput.
  14. Hi fellow Jeepsters, I did search and apologize because I know this has been hashed over and over. I have been a member of the Ol'Yahoo Comanche group and now need advice. I own a 1986 MJ with the 2.8 carburated. It has a 3 sp automatic 904 TF that has finally died. My Transfer case is Select track. The motor had a rebuilt longblock about 2 years ago but I never replaced the trans. The trans for years has made noise, shuddered. I knew it was living on borrowed time. What is the easiest fix? Do I just find a rebuilt 904TF noncomputerized? or do I go with a Ax5? If so what year and do I have to get anything special to make a AX5 standard work on my truck that came with a 3speed automatic. I assume going with a standard I will need new pedals? Cut a hole in my tunnel. Any other swaps that will work. Thanks in advance for your input.
