2 Things, 4X4 And Power
CallmeMaybe replied to CallmeMaybe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
4.0, with 31's. -
So finally took my MJ out after getting everything fixed up and drove it down the highway. With my foot to the floor (i really mean pedal all the way to the floor) in 5th i could barely keep speed at 65mph any ideas? Then took Ol girl out to some back roads to see how she handled on rough patches, went to turn around and sunk in the sand. No biggie 4x4 right?.....Nope, back tires spinning front tires stationary. Dash light comes on but nothing.

Pulled the hose from the radiator, from the engine and pulled the thermostat. Flushed threw all those points, replaced thermostat. left the cap of the resivoir which was filled the the max mark, and fired it up. got to about 210 and stil no fluid was moving threw any of the lines and resivour. What next? Why wasent it pumping? Also replaced my fan's relay and that still didnt come on. Ideas? -

Sorry new, '88 4.0L. -
So I finally got my MJ started and first thing I did was watch the temp gauge. (previous owner blew headgasket) its currently 55 out and it was cool for about 4min then got pretty close to the red. I also noticed the electric fan didnt kick on. Tested it, works fine. Where should I go from here?

Still Not Starting....
CallmeMaybe replied to CallmeMaybe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks everyone for the help, I got the O'l girl to start. So this is a kick in the balls but it turns out there were 2 grounds unplugged. Previous owner did a head gasket and didnt hook them up. They were small ones behind all that junk on the passanger side rear of engine block. I was so lost and just chasing wires and bam stumbled on them. Not done yet new post on Overheating! (prob why it blew a head in the first place!) PS. Darn grounds strike again! -

Update: New Distrib New Plugs New Wires New Coil Got the Module check at the parts store and it passed, but is it possible that it is actually bad? They only hook up to the connecters and not the contacts......I havent checked my connecters going into my module, but know the "no spark" is around my module and new coil. Replaced the CPS....what a pain the a$$. Engine turns over and I'm getting fuel, checked all my grounds don't know where to go next. Is there any relays or fuses that could cause this. -

I don't see how it can't be some wiring somewhere. Gonna check everything next. -

So I got the module checked at the parts store and it passed twice. Figured I had a bad coil. Bought a new coil and still have no spark from the coil to the distributor. Any ideas? -

Update, got no spark at the plugs. Changed distributor, plugs, and wires. Still no spark. Thinking Coil, what do you guys think? -
For those of you who don't know the story I picked my MJ up last Sunday not running. Ive since seated the rocker arms, new alternator and juiced the battery. But its still not firing up. When I went to pick it up we jumped it for a sec and it ran for about a min then died. I figured the seller didnt tighten the rockers correctly after his headgasket replace and the vehicle wasent getting the right air/fuel ratio and was dying. So that being said why isnt it starting now?

What is the stock amp for the alternator? Autoparts stores say 61-100ish. They believe I have a 61amp but will the 100amp fit? It has a bigger casing. 1988 4.0L 4x4

CallmeMaybe replied to CallmeMaybe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Alright after a little tinkering I found all the lifters to be loose. 19ft lbs..... maybe he thought 19in lbs.... Anyway tighten 'em all up and new valve gasket. Charged the battery and then bam.... Nothing. Now its just cranking. No actually turining over. Ideas? -
Mine is super loose, Ive done some research on the repairs and found alot of GM repari posts. Some alright others not so good. Was wondering if anyone has a link to the one they used. Kinda lost after pulling the wheel.

Hurry Help Before Sunday!
CallmeMaybe replied to CallmeMaybe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Alright i picked it up earlier this morning and have already started stripping down the motor. Actually got it running for about 2 mins at the dudes house but there was a terrible ticking coming from the lifters. Knowing the selling had no idea what he was doing during his head gasket repair I'm just going to break it down and insp and re torque. Ill post pics later, thanks for all the pressure lol. -
