J33ps
Took me a while to figure this out, best I can tell my comanche has the AW4 auto tranny in it. It's a 1990 comanche with a 1999 XJ 4.0 but a 1988 transmission and transfer case. I had an 01 Cherokee a few years ago and didn't have this issue. I'm curious if I should be concerned or if this is a sign of something I can address: This truck shifts fine in drive and the other gears. It's not that it's performing badly. But I seem to have trouble feeling where it's at when I move the shifter. When I put it in drive it wants to go down then back up before it locks into place. And 1-2 and 3 section feels pretty sloppy and I can tell sort of but it doesn't feel very clear which one it's locking into. I tested all of them and it seems to shift just fine when driving. I have a TJ but it's got a manual tranny. I'm not super familiar with these autos. If I recall correctly the Cherokee I had there was no question it was locking into each position solidly. Maybe it's normal for 1988...
