89 4.0L 5spd

Recommended Posts

Ok so, i obtained an 89 comanche MJ with tthe long bed, at least, i tihnk it's the long bed.

When i was younger i saw a comanche for the first time and was like "that looks badass, i want one someday". Well a friend had one he obtained in a trade and eventually offered it to me for $700. I just couldn't say no. The wife is still pissed :)

I'm new to Jeep's and know basically nothing about them. However i am not new to automobiles. I've done a lot of work on cars in the past. So this will be an educational experience i am definitely looking forward to.

MY friend had gotten it in a trade and when he got it the front differential was obliterated. Apparently it hadn't seen lube since the 90's and the previous owner had put 275/65r15's on the front and had 255/70r15's on the back. The original gearing was 3.07 but we went to the pull-a-part in nashville and obtained Axles of the 3.55 gearing from 2 different cherokee's. The front axle has been swapped however the rear axle we got was SOA and the comanche is SUA.

I got a in bed roll bar and a front brush guard with the Jeep. A full set of extra steel jeep 15" rims along with the 4 aluminum rims from a ford ranger that was on it.

Right now as it sits the front driveshaft isn't in, and i had a set of 235/70r15's layin around on some rims that i decided to put on it to get 4 matching tires all the way around so i can test out the 4x4 function of the jeep.

Last night i filled the front Diff with gear lube and took it for a quick spin. It's got a miss, there is an injector leaking (2nd from grill), there are no interior lights, no power to radio, no blower motor power, no power to wipers. Basically there is nothing inside the cab that works except the headlight controls. I checked all the fuses and all were good however the blower motor fuse contacts show signs of electrical burning. The original fuel tank is gone and it has a 99 ford ranger fuel tank in the bed hooked up.

So all in all, i've got a lot of tinkering ahead of me.

The comanche sat in the yard of the trader for like 4 years and it fired right up with a new battery, i was impressed to say the least.

The Plan.

First order of business will be swapping out the 3.55 gears in the rear diff that came off the cherokee into the diff that is still on the comanche.

Then the objective is to ensure the 4x4 functions of the comanche work as intended. Then a full tune up is in order. I probably won't buy new injectors however i will find some good looking ones from a junk yard and replace all rubber o-rings on all injectors when i replace the one that is leaking.

It's gonna need both fenders and the front grill assembly.

After i get all the mechanical aspects of the Jeep in operational status and a few runs through some trails under my belt i will be fixing everything inside that needs to be fixed.

I want to paint the jeep camouflage but the jury is still out.

For anyone who has advice on anything i've listed that is wrong feel free and all advice is absolutely welcomed. I will be spending the next few weeks going through the forums trying to find solutions to the problems i've found but if anyone wants to help, i'd appreciate it very much.

Pictures will follow in the coming days. I want to keep a photo journal of my progress.

your turn signal switch could be bad  the interior lights rarely work  on the Comanche.

lol, i meant there are no lights, as in they don't exist... not even a socket where you could put a new bulb...

that and i have no dash lights. nothing makes light in the dark inside the cab :)
