Water pump just about done had it. Found a new one at Autozone, liftetime warranty, duralast, 40 bucks. I am however worried that after putting it on that the pulley also might be bad causing the problem in the first place. Does anyone know where to pick up a water pump pulley for a 1988 MJ 4.0 4WD? I saw in a previous post on the subject that it is supposedly part #53002907. I havnt been able to locate it anyhwere locally as of yet. Any suggestions on where to find a new water pump pulley, renix era? Are renix non-renix 4.0 parts interchangeable?

Thanks in advance!

the pulley just bolts over the hub that comes out of the pump. unless yours is bent it shouldnt be causing a problem.

I just checked it today, the pulley that is.... I hope that it isn't the problem....it is tight on the pump (i did try to see if it needed snugged down) but there is some play in it as if the bearing is bad on the pulley. I guess well see when I actually get the water pump on.

the pulley itself doesnt have a bearing. it spins on a shaft that goes into the pump. a new pump should fix your problem.

I was doing some other things to my engine last week. I noticed that one of my pulley screws was missing. I said, no biggie, I'll fix it later. Next day, got a loose fan belt kind of sound, I was headed home so I didn't really worry about it. About a 1/2 mile from home my belt broke, lost power steering and my temp shot up to about 240 as I pulled into the driveway.

All the bolts but one were gone, the pulley was bound up and my brand new Gatorback was gone. So, be sure you're pulley bolts are tight when you replace it. I used new bolts and lock washers on it. I've been able to get about 1/4 turn on them every other day until yesterday when I declared them "tight enough". Hard to get them nice n' tight when the !$%@#% pulley turns, tight belt or not.

you can use a strap clamp or chain clamp to hold the pulley while you tighten the bolts. they are cheap at harbor freight.

I just got one of those on Saturday at a garage sale for $1.

Also good for holding the top end of my shocks while turning bolt...and I'm trying it on other stuff. Great tool!!
