Renix Gauge Clusters

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know when Jeep switched to the adjustable tachometers for Renix?

I've got an '86 with the full 6-Gauge cluster but they're finally going out. Oil Pressure gauge is dead, tachometer is dead, fuel gauge is on the fritz, and I havent been able to use the Speedometer ever since I did my AX15 and 231 swap, and even then the trip meter, odometer, and speedometer were broken.

I did troubleshoot the cluster using the '90 FSM and everything on the vehicle side is good, it's the cluster itself that's out of spec for most of the measurements.

So, I'd like to throw in a Cherokee cluster, but I have a little 4 banger in my Jeep and a vast majority of the gauge clusters are for 4.0s. I've heard that the late model clusters have an adjustable potentiometer for the tach, but I don't know what the year cutoff is or what the physical identifiers for the adjustable tachometers are

Current state of my patchwork cluster included for giggles

AMC switched in 87 to an adjustable. If you’re good with electronics you could in theory adjust the older style which I would love to know how to do in the event I need to use an older tech from a 6cyl.

Same goes for the speedo connector.

interesting you weren’t able to use your speedo cable on the AX15 even though nothing changed for using the cable there unless you have a AX15 with the digital speedo sensor.

When swapping from an 86 cluster to a 87-90, you’ll need a new speedo cable that will clip on to the new connection.

Good to know, I'm half decent with electronics and dangerous with a soldering iron lol.

As for the speedo cable, it haven't been able to use it because the cable that went to my NP207 before is a LOT smaller than the one for the 231, I've just got the speedo hole plugged for now since the speedometer cable ends at the cluster are different anyways.

You should be able to pull the speedometer gear and housing out of the 207 and put it in the 231.

Nope. Completely different animal. On the 228/9 you can as that carried over to everything else but the 207 is unique for some odd reason.

That's unfortunate but there still might be a solution. If you can find a 228/229 or 231/242 speedo housing and order a speedo cable for a 84 Cherokee it should all go together. That's what I did on my Eagle. The speedometer has a threaded connector.

With the Cherokee cluster, I plan on just using an 87-90 speedo cable since everything would match.

That makes sense I have 2 full 87-90 4.0 clusters that I don't need. PM me if you would like one of them.

Wait, will such bolt to a 207? Might be a worthwhile upgrade since the 207 speedo gear is also unique to the 207.

Not sure never had a 207. But because the 118, 119, 228, 229, 231 and 242 all share the same speedo hole size you can find the correct speedo gear and cable to fit your speedometer.

That would've been a really cool solution if I had something other than a 207, unfortunately the 207 speedo cable can't receive any of the other transfer case's drive gears though. It's a really weird unit and they only make one drive gear for it now and I think it only really accommodates 4.10s and 28 inch tall tires from what I found when I wanted to correct my speedo (when it worked) to a 29" tire.

Weirdo 207 drive gear here:

That looks very similar to the gm turbo 350 gears.

….of course…thanks AMC.

Now I want to hunt a 231 case end and see if that will bolt to the 207 and would help eliminate problems with lifts while using a 207

For what it's worth, I do know that the 207 and 231 tail shaft housings are completely different. Same bolt pattern but the 207 has a lip below the flange.

Out of curiosity, where is the potentiometer and how do you adjust it? Is it just a screwdriver slot or does it have a knob like on a guitar?
