AspenJerista
I've been working on my best friends 87. Backfires through the TB History: replaced engine with known running engine from 89 XJ. Original engine had a bad head. That's a whole other story. New cap, rotor, wires and fuel pump. Refreshed and added grounds throughout. Volvo fuel injectors. Verified TPS settings Verified TDC and distributor clocking. Will replace CPS and drill 5/16 hole for adjustment. Anything I've missed out additional things to consider? Still has C101 but I have the wiring harness from the 89 to put in to eliminate the C101
ghetdjc320
Possible distributor is 180* out of phase? If it doesn’t run and backfires, timing is suspect.
jkchr1s
Does it crank up and run at all? If it does, I would double check the timing. If it won't run at all, try pulling the distributor out and rotate it 180 degrees as ghetdjc stated.
