1987 Comanche - purchase questions. 18k miles

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1987 Comanche Pioneer edition. 2wd. It's really clean and has around 18k (yes, 18,000) original miles on it. It hasn't been inspected or on the road since 2007 and has been garage kept. It has the 4cyl motor. Is there anything specific that I should look for when I go to look at it? I'll attach a couple pictures. One question I have - are the stripes down the side original?

What would be a fair price to expect to pay for this? They were asking 10k obo.

Stripes are not original. It seems weirdly optioned. Bucket seats and the mini console in particular. Looks like it also has cruise. No AC either, but it seems to have quite a few accessories. Must've been an old man special. I'm also seeing the early style center hood prop rod, which came on the early 87s, but it has the later 87-92 Comanche badges. This doesn't raise a ton of concern with me because 87 was a crossover year with both of those parts. I would also want documentation of the mileage, if possible. Its about the least desirable MJ out there. 4 cyl, 2wd, long bed, but there really isn't anything wrong with any of that.

Bear in mind that low mileage does not mean that it will not have issues. The lack of use means that it will have its fair share of leaks and almost every piece of rubber will need to be replaced. Check the floors for rust and see if it looks like it has been painted at all.

If the mileage is legit, the truck isn't rusty, and it hasn't had any paintwork, scoop it up.

Good info, thanks. It definitely has some old guy add-ons. The owner is local to me and is a known collector, so I'm 99% sure the mileage is accurate. I think the tires may even be original. I hear you on the rubber parts. I'll check out those other things when I go look at it.

If it were me, I'd probably buy it, peel off the stickers, fix the leaks, put new tires on it and take it to car shows. For some reason, it just clicked with me that it has the 3 spoke steering wheel as well. You may want to check out eaglescout526's truck. It is very similar to that truck and he is the most knowledgeable guy on the forum when it comes to the 2.5L.

Do you have the VIN for it?

the Vac canister isn’t usually on the firewall with the 2.5L is it?

No. Neither is that cruise control servo that looks oddly GM/SJ but I am more curious about it.

Here is the VIN

According to the title, the current owner bought it in 2004 with 10,009 miles on it.

I added it to the registry.

Thanks! I'm going to look at it here soon. If I end up getting it, I'll add more pictures.

I only took a couple pictures, but it is definitely clean. It needs some things here and there, but nothing too major that I could tell.

The miles are accurate. I'll be bringing it home early next week.

Looks like a good one. I think you got it for a good price. When you get it home, could you get a straight on pic of the dealership sticker and add it to this thread?

Now what is the plan with it? :brows:

For starters, I plan to get it all up to date with new fluids, tires, brakes, remove the stickers, fix the saggy headliner, etc..  I likely won't run it very much, it'll be an extra vehicle. I would like to keep it as close to stock as possible, but I'm not really a fan of those wheels that are on it.

I like that plan. A set of turbines would look on there.

I could definitely see myself piling those rims/tires in the garage (they are too old to trust, but original and irreplaceable) and get some different rims with new tires.

I'd be terrified to drive around such a slice of preserved history. :(
