Power steering refresh

Recommended Posts

The 88 is in need of a power steering refresh. Pump is howling and it's leaking. What's the recommended parts for doing this? I've seen some info about HO pumps, no interest in a WJ pump. If something is a easy upgrade all for it but not wanting to swap a bunch of things to make it work. Right now it's stock but the eventual goal is 33s but 0 offroading.

Also any brand recommendations? Ive always had good luck with lares but RA is showing out of stock. Going to keep looking but any suggestions are welcome.

There's a shop in Denver that will rebuild what you have and swap the worm gear to a faster gear if so desired.  I'd have to look him up if you are interested.  I had mine done by him and am completely happy.  If memory serves the Durango is an option also for heavy duty.

Thanks, I'd be interested if you have it. Otherwise probably do a redhead gear. Yeah Durango gear works. I ran one on my XJ, really liked it but killed it. Broke at the unibody and ended up scrapping it.

The Durango pump swap it a good one, if you want to rebuild your steering box I recommend West Texas Offroad .
They do a steering RAM assist for heavy duty needs. While you may or may not need to go that extreme, they do a great job rebuilding steering boxes in general.

I've used them on 2 Jeeps, one CJ-8 and my MJ.

P.S. when replacing your Steering box/pump make sure to bleed the s*** out of it BEFORE starting the engine.

To do this you can put the front end up on jack stands, then with the engine OFF, slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 100-300 times (no joke) adding fluid until you stop seeing bubbles and the system doesn't take any more fluid.

If you don't bleed they system before starting up the engine you run the risk of cavitating your pump, meaning it gets ruined.

Trust me, I learned this the hard way $$.

The name of the place I used is called Cars Power Steering Inc.  845 Wyandot St.  Denver 80204  303-292-6324.  I also had him check out my pump.  He lowered the pressure on it also.  Said it didn't need to be that high.  It's been 8 1/2 years and all is still going strong.

Thank, but looks like they shut down. Tried calling and number is not in service. Did find another place in Englewood that does rebuilds. $200 for the gear and $75 for the pump.

Great, good luck.  Very likely better than the auto stores.  You might see if they can put a faster worm gear in for you.
